Hi, this is both my first post in here and my first grow, tho I´ve been following this forum for a couple of months, been founding a lot of useful information around.

The idea here is to post a journal and pictures of my first grow so I can get some feedback, so, PLEASE COMMENT WITH ANY ADVICE ABOUT THE PLANTS AND SET UP, I will greatly appreciate it.

If you are following this journal please keep in mind 3 things: First, I live in a country where premium common growing products (Nutrients, equipment, grow mediums, etc… both for soils and hydroponic systems) are very hard to get, so I get what I can from sites like amazon (Limited use of dollars on this country also) and the rest I just make do with what I find.

Second, this is my first grow (had 3 awhile ago that lasted 1 week before my cat ate them :S) so please be patient and try to be constructive when posting suggestions/criticism, and feel free to ask any questions.

Third, English is not my first language, so if you read a word that doesn’t exist in any language known to humanity…. My bad.

THE SETUP.

So far what I have ready and using right now is this:

  • Ph meter.
  • Ph up/ Ph down solutions.
  • Temp./Humidity meter.
  • PPM meter (should be here in a week).
  • Vegetative nutrients (water soluble) 35-5-15.
  • Flowering nutrients (water soluble) 10-30-20.
  • Home-made Hydroponic System for 10 plants with air pump and water pump.
  • Oasis cubes for germinating (I have no direct access to rockwool or other mediums. I should be getting some rockwool cubes in a month or so).
  • Hydroton, this will be my grow medium.
  • Home-made grow tent (50cm deep, 70cm long, 50cm tall). Covered with black heavy fabric, and on the inside silver wrapping paper.
  • Dual circular fluorescent lamps (32w + 20w)
I also have that I am not using yet: 400w HPS lamp, a 400w Metal Halide Lamp (either the ballast, ignitor or bulb are damaged, need to get them check), 2 20w fluorescent light (50cm long kind), one of them is daylight the other is cool-light, just in case my other lamp brakes. Coming soon (a month or so): Growing station with humidity dome and heating mat, Clonex rooting Gel. Planning to get one or two more 400w HPS lamps.

Ill be trying to grow using a Sea of Green method, doing around 20 plants per square meter on the flowering stage. The plants that are gonna be flowered all gonna come from clones (except the seedlings that look weaker, just gonna flower those instead of throwing them away).

Also, I keep a day-to-day journal and pictures of everything that happens in my grow tent, will post those also.

THE SEEDS

Bought 5 fem White Widow seeds from Ministry of Cannabis that right now are stored. For the moment I am growing 3 different unknown strains that might or might not be the same. “Strain 1” and “Strain 2” are from some buds I bought a couple of months ago. The “SS” are two seeds my dealer gave me that he bought some time ago, however he didn’t remember the strain. The reason for using these seeds instead of the White Widows right away is to make all the mistakes I can make from the first ones (like having a cat eat the plants) and then proceed with the higher quality seeds.

The first 3 plants I germinated one week before the others, these are from “Strain 1”. All seed will be germinated using the paper towel method.

DAY 1 (01-10-2011):

2 of the seeds from "Strain 1" have sprouted. The oasis cubes have been soaked for a couple of hours with Ph 5.4 water. This is the Ph that I will use for watering the oasis cubes. Temp: 26°C. Humidity: 63%. Under fluroescent lamps 25cm from the top of the plants. The little white cup has tap water on it, the idea is taht the water evaporetes and raises the humidity a bit. Ignore the dates on the pictures for the first few days, camera wasnt set right. :P

DAY 2 (02-10-2011):

The last seed from "Strain 1" has germinated and have been put under light. Note on the Oasis Cubes: A dry oasis cubes weight 1gram, saturated it will weight around 30-40g. I will water the cubes once their weight drops below 10g. Once they dry after the seed have been planted they will not take as much water, so I just water the cube until it weights around 15g (Ive read that the root system actually benefits a bit from a dryish medium for a while). At this point im watering once a day.

DAY 3 (03-10-2011):

The cubes have been wrapped in thin foil to protect the sides of the cubes from light. Added a small fan inside the grow tent.

DAY 4 (04-10-2011):

Germinating 7 seeds from "Strain 2" and 2 seeds from "SS". The "Strain 1" plants seem to be doing fine. Temp and Humidity havent changed much.

DAY 5 (05-10-2011):

On one of the plants (the oldest) the second set of real leaves is starting to show. Temperature is 29°C (A little high) and Humidity is 56% (A little low).

DAY 6 (06-10-2011):

All plants are showind the second set of real leaves. No roots are showing from the bottom of the cubes yet. One of the "Strain 2" seeds germinated.

DAY 7 (07-10-2011):

Two of the plants are starting to show little roots from the bottom of the cubes. The oldest plant is showing small yellow/brown spots on the first set of real leaves, I suspect is either from letting the Oasis Cube dry too much or the plant its telling me that its starting to need some nutrients, time will tell (Input is most welcome on this). Watering the 2 oldest cubes twice a day now.

NOTE: The last image shows the spots on the leaves.

DAY 8 (08-10-2011):

Dropped the light to 10cm from the top of the plants and labeled them, they one labeled "Strain 1 - A" still have the same spots. They are now sitting on the Hydroton suspended hydroponic system, but its not connected yet.

Hey, this is a new update on this grow:

DAY 9 (09-10-2011)

"Strain 1-A" still showing yellow/brown spots on the old leaves, but all new leaves are looking good and thy have the first signs of root development on the oasis cubes. Three of the "Strain 2" seedlings have been put under fluorescent lights. Two of the seeds havent germinated yet, and I just put 2 White Widow seeds on moist paper towels to germinate.

2011 10 09d (Medium).JPG2011 10 09a (Medium).jpg2011 10 09b (Medium).jpg2011 10 09c (Medium).jpg2011 10 09e (Medium).jpg

NOTE: Although they are sitting on the hydroponic system, this is not connected yet.

DAY 10 (10-10-2011):

The "Strain 1" plants have been put under the hydroponic drip system (Acttive 3 times/day for 20minutes) with half strenght Nutrientes (25-5-15). The Ph is sitting at 6, the Humidity at 68% and the temp at 27°C. The White WIdow seeds germinated.

2011 10 10a (Medium).jpg2011 10 10b (Medium).jpg2011 10 10c (Medium).jpg

DAY 11 (11-10-2011):

I have connected a Metal Halide 400w lamp for the 3 plants on the Hydroponic system. Out of 14 seeds:

* 3 "Strain 1": are under Metal Halide and drip system.
* 7 "Strain 2": 5 of these are under Fluorescent lights.
* 2 "SS": 1 havent germinated the other hasnt broken out of the cube.
* 2 "White Widows": are still on the cube on a dark space.

2011 10 11d (Medium).jpg2011 10 11a (Medium).jpg2011 10 11b (Medium).JPG2011 10 11c (Medium).jpg

DAY 12 (12-10-2011):

The 2 White Widow plants have broken out of the oasis cubes and are now under fluorescent lights. Out of 14 total seeds, 11 germinated and broke out of the cubes (1 of them have a bent stem). The yellow spot on the older leaves of the "Strain 1-A" plant persist, but all new leaves keep looking healthy. Also installed an air extractor.

The levels for the DWC Drip system are:

* PPM: 630
* Ph: 5.8
* Temp: 30°C (MH lamp generates a lot of heat, will try to bring this temp down)
* Humidity: 53% (Due to high temp)

2011 10 12a (Medium).jpg2011 10 12b (Medium).jpg2011 10 12c (Medium).jpg

DAY 13 (13-10-2011):

One of the "Strain 2" plants died when the stem bended and broke, this happened because I left the plant in front of the big fan without realizing it. The rest seem to be doing fine, and the 3 oldest plants are developing a new set of leaves. the Center of the leaves on these plants is a little yellow, will keep an eye out for this.

2011 10 13d (Medium).JPG2011 10 13c (Medium).jpg2011 10 13a (Medium).jpg2011 10 13b (Medium).jpg

DAY 14 (14-10-2011):

Added more nutrients to the "Strain 1" plants and a bit of Epsom salts to the water (200 ppm worth, to counteract the yellow centers in case its a Magnesium Deficency). PPM sits now at 1240. Modified the Hydroponic System, now it haves plastic cover instead of the MDF cover it had.

2011 10 14a (Medium).JPG2011 10 14b (Medium).JPG2011 10 14c (Medium).jpg

DAY 15 (15-10-2011):

Other than the yellowing on the 3 oldest plants everything looks good. Watered the cubes that are still under fluorescent lights.

2011 10 15b (Medium).jpg2011 10 15a (Medium).jpg

DAY 16 (16-10-2011):

The cubes dried fast (Might be the high temp), had to watered them again. The 3 "Strain 1" plants are growing fast, but the yellowish color persist.

2011 10 16a (Medium).jpg2011 10 16b (Medium).jpg

DAY 17 (17-10-2011):

The "Strain 1" plants are starting to show yellow tips (HELP would be appreciated here please). The largest plant ia abous 12cm high. No pictures today :P

DAY 18 (18-10-2011):

The PPM has been lowered to 1100 until I find out where the yellow centers (which is getting worst) comes from. A couple of the seedling under fluorescent lights are showing brown spots (ANY IDEAS??).

2011 10 18a (Medium).jpg2011 10 18d (Medium).jpg2011 10 18f (Medium).jpg2011 10 18c (Medium).jpg2011 10 18e (Medium).jpg2011 10 18b (Medium).jpg

DAY 19 (19-10-2011):

Both problems (Yellowish leaves on the older plants and Brown Spots on the seedlings) are getting worst. Splashed the leaves of all plants with some water with only Epsom salt on them (140ppm). Dont want to change anything else until I figured out what the problem is (or someone figures it out for me :D). Two seedlings ("Strain 2-F" and "WW 1 - A) have bent stems, also noticed a reddish/purple hue on the seedlings stems. Might be nothing, but there is a very soft red tint on the oasis cubes.

2011 10 19a (Medium).jpg2011-10-19b (Medium).jpg

SETUP (NEW):

My rockwool cubes (Hopefully they will be easier to water than oasis cubes) and clonex rooting gel arrived. Also made some modifications and added new equipment in case I need it.

Setup10 (Medium).jpgSetup11 (Medium).jpgSetup13 (Medium).jpgSetup7 (Medium).jpgSetup9 (Medium).jpgSetup12 (Medium).jpg

Hey, nice update! I'm sure I'll be posting pics and maybe I'll even start my own thread once things get going. Got Red Berry Cherry and Vanilla Kush just starting to come up.

Oh yeah, and I'm a girl... :blsmoke:

DAY 20 (20-10-2011):

PPM has been lowered further to 900, and I plan to keep lowering until it hits 500. The drip system its now set to be active twice a day for 20 minutes. One of the samll plants (from "Strain2") has died, out of the other 6 that are still under fluorescent lamps, 1 has a bent stem ("WW - B") and 2 of the others have brownish spots on the leaves. The "Strain 1" plants, tho they dont looks worse, they still have yellow leaves and burnt tips, except "Strain 1 - C" which seems to be doing fine.

2011 10 20a (Small).JPG2011 10 20d (Small).JPG2011 10 20b (Small).JPG2011 10 20c (Small).JPG

DAY 21 (21-10-2011):

A home made system has been added to raise the humidity a little bit. Only one of the small White Widow plants seem to be dying, the rest have stopped deteriorating.

2011 10 21a (Small).JPG2011 10 21c (Small).JPG2011 10 21b (Small).JPG

DAY 22 (22-10-2011):

The levels for the different factors are:

* PPM: 500
* Temp.: 27.3°C
* Ph: 5.8
* Humidity: 56%.

The "Strain 1" plants have stopped getting worst, and hopefully they will start to get better soon.

2011 10 22a (Small).JPG2011 10 22b (Small).JPG

2011 10 22c (Small).JPG

DAY 23 (23-10-2011):

Added a little bit of Epsom salts to the water for a total PPM of 540. The overall health of the plants (except a couple of smaller plants) seems to be picking up. One of the "Strain 2" plants is growing quite faster than the rest.

2011 10 23a (Small).JPG2011 10 23b (Small).JPG2011 10 23c (Small).JPG

DAY 24 (24-10-2011):

The dripping system had a couple of problems so the plants were moved to a similar tank with a better drip setup. Took advantage of this to change the water and set a new nutrient formula (2 parts Vegetative, 1 part Maintance 20-20-20, 1/2 Epsom Salts) for a PPM of 500. Removed one of the White Widows and one of the "Strain 2" plants that kept getting worst. The yellow/white coloring on the leaves of the "Strain 1" plants seems to have stopped and there is even a little green back on some of the tips. Also I removed the brown dried tips of all plants.

2011 10 24d (Small).JPG2011 10 24a (Small).JPG2011 10 24b (Small).JPG2011 10 24c (Small).JPG2011 10 24e (Small).JPG

DAY 25 (25-10-2011):

The yellow/white color on the leaves is still present, but it seems to slowly been getting better. I put a Hydroton bed for the seedlings to help with the roots that are gonna be coming out of the oasis cubes when those plants get older, one of these still have the brown spots on the leaves even tho it still growing new leaves. These small plants are watered once every 2 days.

It seems that all the problems that the plants had are from stressing them too fast too early. So decided to lay back the nutrients for the oldest plants (Going to keep the PPM between 500-600 until they are all ok) and gonna leave the seedling under fluorescents with just water until the root system really bust out of the oasis cubes.

2011 10 25a (Small).JPG2011 10 25b (Small).JPG

DAY 26 (26-10-2011):

As the water is absorved or evaporated the PPM has risen to 590, plan to lower it a little bit later today. The levels are:

* PPM: 590
* Temp.: 28°C
* Ph: 5.9
* Humidity: 59%

The "Strain 1-A" plant, even tho it still have pale leaves, its growing fast, low branches with 5 leaves are starting to grow from the main stem next to lower branches. The "Strain 1-B" plant still has the white/yellowish tint on most leaves and seem to be growing and recuperating slower. "Strain 1-C" looks very healthy.

2011 10 26a (Small).JPG2011 10 26d (Small).JPG2011 10 26b (Small).JPG2011 10 26c (Small).JPG

I think your ppm is way too high initially. I was told that you should adjust the ppm x100 for every 1" of plant growth. And you should test your water 1st, and subtract your starting ppm from your total. For example, if your starting water is 100ppm, and your plants are 4", your ppm should be 100 x 4 (the inches of the plant), plus the starting ppm of 100 = a ppm of 500.

@Ironmike61, thx for the advice.

Thats what I figured, I have been lowering my PPM every day and now is sitting between 500-600. Plan to keep it that way until I see some serious root grow.

Wow, you are burning the shit out of those seedlings and you added epsom salt? 500-600ppm is still too high.

Don't wrap your cubes in foil or anything else.

Also, that wooden lid is gonna start causing problems sooner rather than later... probably already contributing to your difficulties.

Edit:

Oh, I see you swapped out the wooden lid. Good idea, but I'm sure having it there in the first place didn't help. And what are oasis cubes?

Hey lordjin,

Yep, I traded that wooden lid for some plastic ones about 1 week after germinating the first seeds. Epson salts was added in very small quantities to the 3 largest seedling cause the nutrients have no traces of magnesium in them. You are aboslutly right about the ppm, right now is at 560. Any suggestions as to what it should be for those 3 large seedlings?

The oasis cubes are a green floral foam that I had to use instead of rockwool, its not ideal but in here its all I could find when I started the grow (My country has import problems :S), however I managed to find a rockwool supplier here so the next badge will have no oasis cubes.

Thx for the repply man, cheers.

I suspect your canna babies didn't agree with those oasis cubes. Yes, if it is indeed that green foam flower arrangement are stuck into, then it's probably why your plants struggled so much.

It looks like you're pretty crafty and you put a lot of time and effort into your grow project. You just veered off course a bit at the outset with less than ideal material for rooting seedlings / clones.

If it's not too much a hassle to start over once you get your actual rockwool going, I think you'll do a lot better. I'll bark at you if you do something wrong too... I'm at least good for that much.
