Is it possible to run a say 150/250 watt HPS bulb through a 600 watt ballast or do you have to have the specific ballast for a particular wattage bulb?

if you have a 600w hps ballast you can run any wattage of lamp(hps/mh) up to a 600w.Is it possible to run a say 150/250 watt HPS bulb through a 600 watt ballast or do you have to have the specific ballast for a particular wattage bulb?

you can also run an mh lamp in an hps ballast.
any wattage of bulb can be used as long as its 600w or under.

It would not be a good idea to use a 150w HPS bulb in a 600w ballast. The reason you cannot put any of the HID type bulbs in a regular light fixture, is because these bulbs do not regulate their own current - the more power that is supplied to the bulb, the more it will use - the ballast is what controls the current entering into the bulb. So if you put, say, a 1000w bulb into that 600w fixture, it would safely operate at 600w for you. Anything smaller than the rated watts will use all the current it gets until it blows.
