I was at lowes and i found h.i.d. bulbs for half of what the grow shops are selling for. Lumens seem to match up the same. I found a 400w hps that said it was 40k lumens. Are these just as good as the ones they sell in the grow shops. Or are those specifically designed for growing?

it depends on what features they have and stuff like that, its like asking if the cand at the candy shop is any different than candy you buy online, lol, it could be or it could be the same exact stuff, candy is a broad category with many options, so is lighting.

Yes Lowes carries several HID and HPS bulbs....various wattages. I'm currently using one of the 400 hps......seems ok to me and I like the price. I'm sure someone will belch out some technical bullshit why paying more would be better..........
I also use a 1000w hps I got from an online cheap supplier and it's good too. Both have lasted at least one growing season and are still going............

Do those bulbs from Lowes fit the big screw-in socket? I think its called a mogel or mogal socket, something like that.

Ummm.. my god ppl.. use your brains here!!! Go back to Lowe's man... and it will say on the box what kind of base it has.

mogul base; medium base; or standard base. Take your old bulb with you.. this idea also helps find the bulb you need.

:| sheesh..

Ignorance is bliss I suppose... :\

I personally believe, (can't prove or even show data), that most of the bulbs are almost exactly the same. Reason being, is there are only so many manufacturers, using the same technique to make these bulbs. I think the "grow bulbs" are drastically over priced, to make it seem like you are getting something that you are not. I mean even if the difference is 10k lumens, thats still not worth the $60 or so extra. I have purchased all the bulbs that I use from electrical supply stores, with the exception of one that came with the HTG $120 400w system. The 400w bulb I have from the electrical supply store seems just as bright, and on the same spectrum. BTW I paid less than $20 for the 400w's and i think about $60 for the 1000w but I could be wrong on that one as it was about 4 years ago that I purchased it. (only been in operation for a few months tho)

I had not been to Lowes yet. I was trying to save the 50 mile roundtrip if they were not the correct bulbs. I am sorry if that puts your panties in a wad. If asking and answering questions is a problem for you, may I sugest that you, by your own definition, must be one of the most blissful assholes on the planet. :finger:
