Just saying hello

Hi folks!
I trolled this site for a week or so before I joined, due to all the great info shared and the like.
I was debating on starting to grow. Last time I attempted, I think I was about age 14 and raised 6 beautiful, happy, MALES with a plain light bulb.. lol
Fast forward 20 years..I was thinking of something small- just as a hobby with some personal being the payoff, not a business. Maybe a tent with a few nice scrogs, w/e.
I got laid off from work just before Christmas, and my funds are running low so going out to buy a whole grow outfit isn't feasible for me right now. That's ok since I like to build and tinker with stuff, so figured I could make up some ground being crafty.
That being said, I have a buddy who has been running a few years with some top notch gear. He would be my only personal source of helping hand in any endeavors like this, but he keeps putting down all my ideas and plans. Now I'm just getting discouraged, and am debating scrapping the whole idea.

Regardless, I'll be here soaking up all the information I can just cause I like to learn. Hopefully I will be able to contribute using my plant based knowledge from 18years as a horticulture student and professional botanist.

Welcome back to RIU!
Sounds like you will have some good information and tips on growing yourself - being a freaking BOTANIST!

Have fun, learn more, get a grow in all the way to the finish line!

Thanks for stopping by with words of encouragement! I kinda needed that after constantly receiving negative feedback from a dude who should be my biggest supporter; especially when I get all the calls for plant questions..
Not that I really care what anyone else thinks, but I've been battling some wicked depression lately. So as big of a pussy as I sound saying it, my buddy really hurt my feelings this time. I just need to "man up" and keep my plans to myself(and RIU) from now on. Cause if I go through with my build I won't be asking for any f-ing help from now on. He can just eat a big bag of nuttsacks.

Welcome to Riu!:bigjoint:
I grow using the k.i.s.s method. Keep it as simple as possible to start. I Just give em What they need...not what i think they should get ;)
Why not give it a go! Best way to learn is experience.

More people would be successful at growing if they could keep it simple. Plants only start out with 2 basic needs- light and water. If they need anything else, they are sure to let you know whether it's too late or not! Lol
Most of my experience come from my specialty in plant structure. One of my main reasons for attempting a grow would be some stress tests, plant form manipulation, etc.
Basic stuff I could learn reading in these forums, but I'm a hands-on kinda guy lol. I bet 99% of people here know more about the science of growing our medicine than I do, but I DO have a great understanding of branching and rooting structures, and general non-specific plant health.

Well cant wait to see what you can do. I love Lst and FIM. Makes for short bushy plants ;)
Sounds like you have the knowledge now you just got to apply it and gain the hands on experience.
Another problem i see a lot here is people over love their plants to the point of harming them? Sometimes best to leave them be

Good advise from Lime73.........& id start with photoperiod plants, a lot more forgiving than Auto's, also if you scroll thru the seed banks & look at medicinal strains , youll find sum strains address , depression , better than others,
The only bit of other advise i can add , is "the only dumb question , is the 1 U dont ask "......all the best

I've seen a bit of that on here reading journals for hours and hours. Some still surprised me in the end, leaving me wondering what might have been! Lol

Just my personal philosophy:

If a plant wants to grow, it's gonna grow regardless of what it has to overcome. It doesn't really need your "help", it just needs something slightly resembling it's native conditions.
If a plant doesn't want to grow, nothing you are gonna do will change that. You are just creating the atmosphere to make it want to. Genetics and environment, the rest is a bonus. Gotta grow healthy plants before you can grow big beautiful healthy plants..
