I lived in San Diego in 96 when Prop 215 passed. As 1000s of others, I went and got my Medical Card (legit Arthritis in hips). In the Later 90, there were some reputable stores set up, and it was fun walking into shops looking at different strains and ordering an 1/8... But when they were costing $50-80 and it quickly became less fun. Living in Beautiful San Diego, where the weather is perfect, and the laws were "lax'd", I grew a weed outdoors with great success. I no longer live in San Diego. And my new state is notorious for locking up Willie Nelson to Snoop Dog for possession, so Growing like I did in San Diego is not an option. I make frequent trips (monthly) to San Francisco, and have a buddy whom I can get a quality oz for $200, so I was not a big concern, but I missed the growing.

I live in a rural area, but still have close neighbors. One of them is quite old and still views Marijuana as it was portrayed in in all the great Anslinger films from the 30s. If I chose to put a plant or two into pots on my back porch, they would be discovered and I assume this one neighbor would have to do his duty and call the authorities... Because of this I was content just brining items to my home state with me from SF and enjoying them in the privacy of my own house. But then I talked with another neighbor. Her son is in his mid-20s and suffers greatly from crohn's disease. He is on a number of meds and is hospitalized once or twice a year to have organs removed. I chanced it and asked if she considered Marijuana to help some symptoms (get him hungry, help him to rest, reduce some pain...), to my surprise, she was very interested, and actually got some marijuana from a local 'handy-man' whom we all use from time to time. I asked to see it. IT WAS FREAKING BRICK WEED FROM MEXICO WITH MORE SEEDS THAN USABLE POT!!! I immediately went home, got the rest of what I had (1/4) and told her to please never get pot from that guy again... So now, I am brining home 2oz a month. on a plane. crossing many state borders. landing in the least friendly pot state there is. Good pot mind you, so I smell fantastically sweet and aromatic, which is a danger... So... screw the old neighbor, screw the police, screw everyone who has an issue... but there is someone who needs this more than I do. I have a kid who needs steady access to something he just can not get... I am going to grow, and I am going to teach this kid how to be self-sufficient as I was in SD.... But, I have never grown indoors, and I am limited with rooms. So, I bought a cabinet from a company which will hold 12 veg plants and 9 flowering plants. It is set up with water timers, drip systems, lights, and air control. This will be easy....

I order $300 worth of seeds. I am set. In SD, I would plant 30 seeds, and I would get at least 20-25 seedlings... But again, outdoor, with a soil mix I have used for years, and in the open where I can work and admire their beauty. Now, I am going to grow in Rockwool, should be easy if I just follow the instructions that came with this box, right? I soak the rockwool overnight in pH balanced water with a little growth hormone as suggested. At the same time, I soaked my seeds overnight so they would start to crack. I put the seed in the rockwool, put on the dome as instructed and wait... 3 days, I would have expected seedlings, I have nothing. they must need water... 7 days, nothing. 14 days, 2 little seedlings. 21 days, back down to 1 single straggly seedling. It has been growing for 3 weeks... so, I will fert as required by the cabinet instructions for week 3 plants... By day 30, it is burnt and dying. I try to flush, but I call it, and pull it. I also open the other 29 rockwool, and there was NO growth on any of them. Not Pleased.

I go on vacation for a few weeks and go to Amsterdam (happen stance, not planned). I talked to many people about what I was experiencing. Most were sympathetic and wanted to help. Here is what I found, people just use soil there, not much help when I can not grow in soil outdoors, limited space indoors for soil, and already bought a $4000 cabinet to suit my requirements. So, I am back home and ready to log my experiences. I want assistance, but have no where to go per se... so lucky you, will all share my adventurers...

I have gotten another $300 of seeds (3 strains, 10 seeds each), and I have a new plan. I am taking 15 seeds (5 of each strain), and doing what I know. I am going to grow indoors with dirt just until I find THE mother plan from each strain. Then I will continue to grow those 3 plants indoors and use their clones in the box. But that feels like cheating and giving up on the box as far as seeds go... So I am going to do the other 15 seeds in rockwool again and pray to the green gods that this is not a waste. I germinate all seeds, I mix together my old go to soil medium, and I soak my rockwool, and I plant. And this time, I am not going to water the rockwool at all until I see signs of growth or 4 days pass. They are in a humidity dome, so they should not need water. The other big thing I am changing is I am starting the Rockwool next to the soil indoors next to my soil flat. I am kept all seeds in their medium in the dark for 12 hours, then I turned on a 175w HID light and left it on 24 hours/day. Here is the difference so far... That was all 8 days ago, and here is my progress. I will add to this thread weekly and explain what I have done...

Day 5 under lights

Day 8 under lights (Watered soil today and Rockwool yesterday, so that is why it is so wet... not watering either again for 4 days, going to do my best to ignore them so I don't over analyze what they do/do not need. They have air, heat, water, and light.... they will be fine for 4 days... right?!?! :-) )

I will post what I find in 4 days... I hope it is promising. Because in 5 days I have to go to San Francisco. I hope that if I water both plots in 4 days, they will be fine for when I am gone for the 3 days following.

I will keep you posted.

I am starting to think that I am over-thinking the Rockwool. They are growing slowly, but perhaps that is to be expected?

Since I am leaving tomorrow I took the time to give the plants some TLC, The soil plants are doing very well (as expected.) The rockwool are still standing and there are a few roots coming through the bottom. I decided to soak the 3" rockwool in a 1/2 nutrient level that I would do on a first week clone/seedling. I left the 1" cubes at about a 10-20% moisture level and placed them in the 3" cubes when they were 60% soaked.

NOTE: all water is pH'd between 5.6-6.2 for all intent and purposes.

I left the soil plants as is for now. When I get back on Thurs (leave on Mon), I will have to transplant the soil plants to larger pots. I am starting the 3 strains, and I have 2plants x 2strain that I am going to save for the mothers. The third strain is a Ruderalis, so cloning those would be pointless. I will have to remove a few that have started in soil and transplant them to a rockwoool when I return. Since these are going to flower no matter what, I will put them on the Rockwool schedule when I get back. I will also start the extra seedlings of the remaining 2 strains that are not chosen for mothers on rockwool, but that will not be fore a few weeks until I know which ones look the best.

Here is an update with the 3" cubes, and a slight modification of the lights. Turned on the 175w HID at 3ft for 24hour cycle. Again, will adjust to 16-18 when I return. But that depends on what I find on Thursday.
