Kitty Litter?

Hey all. Just gathering some stuff for a indoor garden. I could not find perlite. I was wondering if I could use kitty litter in lew of this. I purchased the cheapest I could find so that the only ingredient is crushed clay and nothing else. Do you think this will work or did I just waste $2?

i dont see why it wouldnt work but thats not to sa it should be done. Perlite is available at almost any store with a garden section. It should be near the soil. Order online if nothing else, its like 5 bucks. Id go without before id use cat litter though.

Clay can possibly have a chemical run-off. Id order some online if u cant find it. Where u lookin? Lowes,home depot, meijers all still have it available. $3.29 for a large bag of miracle grow perlite. Or, vermiculite.

Perlite is the way to go, I bought a huge bag for $17, the bags almost as tall as I am and should last me about a year. lol

You have to keep in mind that they don't care about sterile conditions when they make kitty litter. You could have all kinds of eggs & mold spores in there. Definately not a risk you want to take.

And never use anything from Miracle Grow. 20% of the problems I've seen in here were caused by Miracle Grow products. Even their Perlite has nutes acording to the packaging. That stuff really isn't made for marijuana.

Thanks for the info guys. The kitty litter will be going into the litter box. Luckily I have 3 cats so it's not a total waste!

I have to goto a nursery or garden shop to find perlite that isn't Miracle Grow perlite, and I'm happy to do so as I do believe the experienced growers who tell me it's better to avoid it if possible ... glad you can put the kitty litter to use - that's a good thing ...

Dannygreeneyes is full of shit! Miracle grow doesnt add nutes to thier perlite. It a volcanic Rock! If he spent more time reading ingredients, insead of forums, he would know that.%100 perlite

$2 is not a total waste kitty litter is good for soaking up spills and is made of clay mostly,and sawdust. it is very basic and will raise your ph to a level that causes nutrient lock-out and your plants will die. also, it eventually turns to mud and will kill your plants due to root rot. fish tank gravel is very good add about 3-4 inches per pot. really does nice, and it is clean, and safe enough for delicate fish, so it is ok for plants. expanded clay pellets work awesome! hydroton is the jam when it comes to mediums. especially in soil.

you are wrong, perilte is essentially expanded asbestos. And is obsolete and extremely dangerous, even tree bark is better.

I read the package the first time I went to Home Depot to start getting the basics, and the one I held in my hand & read had a little chart that showed nute levels in the perlite.

Now if Miracle Grow has more than 1 brand of perlite that they sell I do appologize. But I still stand by the rule of "no miracle grow = less headaches" after reading all the problems that have arrisen from various Miracle Grow products.

Oh and bright boy, volcanic dirt has some of the stongest nutes of any naturally formed dirt. I wouldn't be suprised if the volcanic rocks also carried some level of nutes.

this is tru but hydroton and even rockwool cubes r expensive and hard to find in sum areas. perlite is fine. i dont think that FF would use it in there soil if it wasnt.

Dude, you do realize that asbestos is illegal to sell, right? It causes serious lung diseases.

I had to take asbestos tiles out of a basement apartment in a house left to me from my grand dad so I know this for a fact. I couldn't rent the place till all the asbestos was taken out. And you best beleive that I was wearing a good particle mask when I took that stuff out, solid form or not I wasn't about to take chances.

Wood, or bark, isn't my first choice because it absorbs and holds water. So while your dirt may be dry, the tree bark in the dirt could still be full of water. You can use it if you want, but don't say I didn't warn you if you start running into over & under watering problems.

MG soil has Timed release balls that release nute wen u dont want them and destroy plants....sumtimes, tho. not EVERY time

yes perlite is there in the soil to airate it better and to give better run off and drainage, bark would do the complete opposite
