Landlords and grow tents.... advice needed please

Title says it all really. Im moving out very soon and have never grow marijuana, let alone grown it on someone else's property! Im worried my landlord could find out that im growing during an routine examination of the property. The grow tent is 4x4 feet and about 7 feet tall. In addition to that there will most likely be ducting coming out the side, and the noise of the fan will certainly draw attention. The grow tent will be in my bedroom.

What can i do to ensure i dont get busted? If he see's the tent, do i have the right to not allow him to see whats inside? What could i tell him as an excuse? What if he heres the fan?

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
issa.

renting and growing is a BAD idea, but you could try to fit the grow tent into a closet to conceal it it would also probably help with the fan noise.:peace:

you can always say your tent is a photography dark room. dark rooms have ventilation as well!!!!!

you can say its a clothing wardrobe!

I rent and grow, and what i did was pick out a closet, then i bout a cheap door knob that locks with akey you can find them at dollar general for like six bucks, then i have two fans in there with a few cfls don't grow in mass amounts two maybe three plants then i hang up a dark sheet so that no light can get through the cracks, also dampens the noise of the fan. however does not remove the noice, keep music playing if your landlord comes in, and when it starts to smell i use an ionizer as well as about five different types of air fresheners in key places, also i taped the ventillation from that room so the rest of the house does not smell, only check your plants when you know the landlord won't show up also cause this prevents the smell from leaking out. Hope that helps

I think LoudBlunts has it right as far as what it could be (i would go with photography too though it looks more like a film dryer) - but that gives you an excuse to say - no light can enter - it will ruin my pictures so no, you can't look in there. it will also explain the vents and fans. though anyone with half a brain may recognize it. but if you haven't seen one before...

and felthustler also has it right - put it in a closet and put a lock on it. if the landlord is over often enough to notice that - i would strongly consider waiting to grow cause the smell and electric bills could possibly be more issues.

I agree. If you are renting, you really want to go for the stealth approach. And a 4X4X7 is not exactly stealthy. What I personally would do is look at the DIY forums and put together one of those grow boxes with the Tupperware tubs and put that in a closet. It may not yield quite as much, but you have a far less chance of being suspected of anything.

Save the big grow tent for when you own your own place.

Depends on how wise your landlord is. Ultimately you can try and get away with whatever you want. Some will be more successful than others.

I suppose it all depends on how much risk you are willing to take. I would say for most people who are renting, it is probably better to take the stealth approach.

It's all situational. But If I were renting, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Stealth is much safer than a large grow tent er uh photography room.

Oh and in the age of Digital SLR's...that "dark room" might be a bit of a hard sell. To each his own though. :peace::joint:

many pro fine art photographers still have dark rooms - a very good friend has one in his basement and the film dryers do look perfect for a grow box.

Ok great! So there is the OP's answer. Dark room it is! You will be safe with that.
It should work, but my preference would be to conceal the cabinet either in a closet or make it look like a wardrobe or something. and a lock or two!

The only problem with that is if there are no other photography related items...and there is a hint of smell, then that big black box is going to be awfully suspect in my opinion. That is why I stated that something stealthier may be in order.

I actually own one, and they are not absolutely light proof (So much for the "Dark Room" idea) At least mine isn't. Some light leaks around the bottom because of the way the passive venting is designed. Also, some pin hole light leaks are around the zipper areas because the material is pulled tight on the frame. It would seriously fail as light proof upon close inspection.

Email, do you have any experience with these grow tents, or are you speculating?

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I am talking about any grow box not any specific kind. No, I have no tent - I built my own box. I didn't think OP had a tent either.
LB - how is your tent? any light leaks and how did you fix them? If tents and hydrohuts have light leaks why does anyone recommend them?

and as my other post mentioned, that would be a last resort idea anyway -- much better to conceal it in a locked closet or cabinet.

If you read the original posters post...he is specifically talking about grow tents.

"The grow tent is 4x4 feet and about 7 feet tall."

Hence the title of the thread. Not a photography box.

Those tents leak light. They do so especially when you use a 6 inch inline duct fan. The flaps at the bottom suck in to allow air to enter. The light leaks are not glaringly bright. But it will NOT pass as a photography dark room if you get close to it.

It would seem really strange if a landlord sees light coming out of the bottom...(no matter how small the amount) and the grower says not to go in there because my film needs to be in the dark.

So, my point is that having a grow tent out in the open would not be a good idea if your landlord has any kind of sense. Stealth is your better option. Use something not so obtrusive.

Now, I have no experience with photography black boxes. Perhaps those would work...but that is another thread. :)

hmm thanks for the responses. In regards to putting the tent in the closet, how will i provide adequate ventilation? i cant do any sort of modification to the property, like cutting holes in walls or anything.

also, i could have my lights on 830 pm to 830 am so when the landlord comes to inspect the lights WOULD be off. But then theres the smell issue, how affective are carbon filters?
