Lava rock or Clay Pebbles

What's going on ? Back with another topic of discussion . So as I did my RDWCWF system I picked up a bag of lava rock. I heard it could be used and I also heard because of the pocket holes in it they hold moisture really good. Now on the bad side I heard as the roots grow they could get damaged because of the ridges in lava rock can cut the roots . I wanna get some other opinions about lava rock and if you have or what is preferred. Thanks again

I have used hydroton or neoprene collars with success. Never used lava rock. I would probably use neoprene collars if I fired up the old RDWC again.

How do you grow now
DTW Coco Coir/perlite. 70/30.
Megacrop 1 Part plus epsom, supplemented with PK booster in mid flower.
2 gallon pots and usually run 6-7 plants.
I find it uses the same amount of water but is way less hassle. One pump on timer that runs for 20 seconds 2-5 times a day. The 50 gallon nutrient reservoir last at least 7 days.
Plus it cost way less.
No chiller
No RO
Nutrient cost is about $30 for an entire grow.

I've grown all kinds of plants in lava rock but never cannabis and can say they pose 0 threat to the roots of anything I've grown
