Leaving the bulb against the reflector glass?

So my reflector didn't ship with the proper bulb insert (it's a euro reflector from htgsupply), and I'm wondering if it is possible to run the hps bulb within the hood and simply position the bulb on top of the glass? Basically the bulb would not be suspended by anything, and would sit directly on the glass. This is the only way I can run it that I can think of until they ship me the proper bulb insert. My main concern is that the bulb will overheat (idk how, just don't want it to happen), explode, or do some other stupid shit. Anyone aware of anything that could happen if I ran the bulb while it was sitting on the reflector glass, shining down on the plants?

You talking about the socket\cordset? I wouldn't run the bulb like that without the proper socket. The lens should be tempered glass so it shouldn't be damaged by heat, but that just doesn't sound sturdy. Seems like the bulb would want to roll or displace itself in some manner, without being affixed to the hood itself.

You could always hang the lamp vertically temporarily, with a fan beneath the bulb.
