Leaving tomorrow... How does this sound? Rep+ Given

I started a thread earlier this week trying to figure out the best way to leave my plants for the week.

I will be gone Monday-Saturday so I won't be able to water them Monday-Friday. NORMALLY, I give them each about 12 oz. of water every 3 days. I figure this means they drink about 4 oz. a day. My plan is to overwater them so they don't dry out too much while I'm gone. I'll also put some wet paper towels on top of the soil to slow down evaporation. I was thinking about watering them each tonight with 20 oz. and letting the excess water collect in the pot trays. This way, the plant can drink the excess when the soil dries out. Questions...

1. Normally 12 oz. every 3 days - 20 oz. at once for 5 days a good idea?
2. Should I pour all of the water INTO the pot - or put some of it directly in the trays?
3. Is the paper towel idea good?
4. Any more advice?

Thanks for the help everyone! This forum has been a life-saver (for my plants). :weed:

sounds good to me. how old are ur plants? u feedin them? i gotta do the same thing, gonna be gone wednsday thru sunday. just poor all the water directly in pots let the excess come out. i dont see any problem with damp paper towels, ceran wrap may work even better. good luck man. even if they are completely dried out when u get back, one good watering will revive them back to normal

i think your 20oz math should be fine... apart from a slow drip system, you dont have too much choice... dont want the soil to be water logged for the whole week.... whatever water wont absorb into the soil will drain into your pan and wick upwards as needed... they may be dry when you get back, but they should be fine

They're about 4 weeks into flowering. They're only in 6" pots though so they don't retain water for as long. Maybe I'll do paper towels AND seran wrap. Thanks for the help and good luck with yours!

good advice - try saran wrap with some uncovered soil to let oxygen get to the roots
Thanks! I thought about that while lying in bed last night. That exact thing dawned on me... I'd need to leave some space open and not cover it completely with saran wrap so my plants don't suffocate. I think I'll use paper towels AND saran wrap.

In a 5 gallon bucket, I'll water once a week give 3, or take 1 day(s).

Xplant into bigger pots, and it will take longer to use up the water.

(timer, bucket, and pump can work wonders too)

as long as your pots have open bottoms that feed into trays... it would be hard to drown them. If your containers didn't have drains, then that would be my biggest concern... at some point the plants are just unable to breathe and use the water, but you should be fine even if you soaked them. they'll probably be drooping, but as already said, they should bounce back w/o a problem.

I decided to put cardboard above the soil. I figure it will block the light from reaching the soil, which will keep it cooler and decrease evaporation. I watered them each with 23 oz. of water and the runoff is in the collection trays. Hopefully it will work!
