The guy in the shop gets more commish from the overpriced led, get the HPS and tell him to fuck off on the way out.

4 plant grow? is it all for you? The reason I ask is you'll pull more weight with the 600 but you could EASY pull enough percy for yourself with the right LED.
Advantages = no heat signal, low electricity bills, light will last a decade.
disadvantages = pull more weight/bigger buds with a 600

haha well I guess in your odd analogy I do, as an LED grower. I'm happy to have my little op running all the time & dont wanna sell any of my goods so LED makes much more sense for me. Electricity isnt getting any cheaper and I can grow loads of top quality bud off 140watts.

Def go with the 600 watt. I have seen very few grows on here or any other site that the grower was overly impressed with led's. Someone will def disagree with me, but this is just my opinion. HPS all the way.

Your question is kinda like its 1968 and you're asking "Hey, does that fuel injection thing really work?" The answer is yes. And for quite some time there will be people that dog them and say the same thing as "naturally aspirated is the only way to go, injection sucks"-- ("HID, bro. LED sucks)
So yeah, it works and has its advantages--- as does HID. The question at this point probably runs more like can you buy an LED without getting ripped off? Again, yes, but you will have to take the time to study the issue. The super expensive ones cost too much for what you get and the super cheap ones are a rip too because they are low quality and/or dont do the job.

..if you are thinking about a 600w hps, then for sure, you´d have to waste boatloads of money to get the same results with leds.

if you just need the occasional smoke and or electricity/heat are of more concern to you than yielding the most in the smallest space, then you should go with leds (or t5´s or cfls, they actually seem to be pretty similar to leds in results, specially when compared with price..)

though id personally rather go with a 250w hps than leds.

ive seen alot of talk on leds.

but not alot of walk (and the walk ive seen (and im pretty much a no life internet geek who checks forums like this a few times daily :))

aint that impressive.

not enough to shell out that kinda dough.

LEDs will work when you have 500 watts on a 1' panel, with selective wavelengths and confined beam 60 to 120 degrees. I made some small panels, and their light felt very warm, but its not enough.. It has to be very dense, and those are still $2000 range. I saw a cheap 400 watt HID at the hardware store for $40, worksite variety. $200 for high density fluorescent arrrangments.. The relative cost of "good" LED lighting is way too high.
