I am looking to start a small 4x4 tent up using Viparspectra XS series lights.
Is 4 - XS2000 (rated at 240w each) going to be overkill?

Two of those lights would be enough. Any more than that and you would need to start adding CO2 and managing your nutrients and water to account for the intense light. The plants increase their water/nutrients and CO uptake with higher levels of light. If you dont account for that you will run into deficiencies and have sickly plants as a result.

I thought about that, but figured I could just dial down the wattage a bit to try and find the “sweet spot”. Not sure exactly how or where that would be lol, but figured I’d start around 40w/sq ft and slowly build up from there to see how the plants responded..
Otherwise, would adding a couple of those “Exhale” Co2 bags to the tent be sufficient? By managing nutrient, water I’m assuming you mean watering/feeding would have to be more frequent and heavier on the nutes.

My medic grow Fold 8 is killing it in a 4x4 at 80%. This is my first grow with it but I'm pretty sure the yield will beat my last grow with a 630 CMH. At 80% it's running at around 550 watts and it's way more than enough light. These bar lights are fantastic with their light spread. Not sure if it would fit in your tent, I've got mine in a Gorilla lite and it's a perfect fit, the sides just barely touch the frame. Every part of it is cool to the touch.

so the grow won’t start for a while. At least a month or so. That being said, I’m trying to spread my cost out instead of dumping $800 at once and I need other equipment as well.. i decided to go with 2 - XS4000 in there instead of the 4 - XS2000. Im going to grab the first light, the tent, fans, etc.. and was going to add the other fixture later on in veg before I flip to flower. I can get one shipped right now for 350
the tent I’m going to use is a Vivosun 48x48x72..the one with a pitched roof. I love the coverage of the bar type fixtures that you’re recommending, but I’m afraid with my setup it’ll barely fit

Offer up. Be realistic with your pricing. Here’s a screen shot of how terrible the 2nd hand market is. Gavita HPS fixtures go for about $30 max.
I'm running 2 Viparspectra XS4000s in a 5X5. You're gonna love it!

I’d skip the viparspectras and go with something with more red. I do prefer the mars since it has uv and ir built in but for the price the samphon is hard to beat. Pretty sure they’re the same manufacturer as medicgrow

Are you asking this, because that's what you have on hand?
If so, I'd run 3 of them in a sort of "triangular" configuration in a 4x4.

I’d wager the UV and far red they add aren’t actually doing anything other than helping them market their lights.
