Hope this thread grows I'm interested in knowing about leds seems like the wave of future growing but too pricy for me till I really understand it's worth it. My trusty mh/hps hasn't let me down yet

I'm curious as well I don't have the room for indoor yet so I stick to outdoor but LEDs could be a good option once I get the space

They'll work but not very good. They must remain ultra close to the plants and will not penetrate very far at all. Decent for a cabinet but not much else. You'll also need strong airflow in between them and the plants.

They are suspending the lights inches over the plants tops. Gonna be in a room and they're going to put up Mylar for reflection. I was very skeptical when my friend showed me the LEDs he was using they don't look very powerful. Would he be better off using CFL's?

From the # of plants your friend wants to do these LEDs and/or CFL's will not achieve the kind of results you're looking for. 10 plants is a good amount. They should be under 1k of light or more depending on size. These LED's and or CFL's would be better suited for supplemental side lighting.
