You obviously don't understand the concept of testing the light distance with your hand then. It is used to determine how close you can get it, not how far away you can get it. There is no set method to wrk out what distance to put your plant, that is why growers use the hand trick.

Well it depends on your hood. I know you don't want to hear that but if you have an enclosed hood and a good fan you can get your light at 12 inches no problem probably even closer! If you have an open hood I would start at 18 inches and move down a couple of inches every day untill you see the plants get pissed and move back up. The hand thing is the way to do it but obviously you don't want to do that so do like I said first. Move your light closer and closer till you see the plants wilt or you kill a few leaves by burning them.

You want the light has close has possible, without burning the plants.Put your hand under the light if its too warm for hand it will be too warm for your plants.use a ossalating fan to blow across the top of the plant this way you can get away by haveing the lights closer. The only time i would have my light has far a 1 ft of the tops is after week 5 of flowering but no higher, than a ft,this will give all the plant light.Because round about week five of flowering growing holts in some cases, and the plants become wider so by haveing a foot gap all the plant gets light.Think of it has a torch beam,at week 5 because the plant is at the stage where growing holts and the plant is at its widest,by haveing it at 1 ft this gives a wider arc of light.Through the rest of the grow i have the lights has close has 6 ince......hope this helps tyke,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

We're talking about a 250 watt lamp here man, not a 600. 18 inches is WAY too far from the plants for a 250. You want a 250 like 6 to 8 inches from the top of the canopy. I run my non-cooled 400 almost that close, just a couple inches further away.
