Light Questions

I have started a small grow box to get some plants started before i move them to an outdoor location. I have 2 100W bulbs right now which seem to be producing tons of heat. With this light should I set it up on a timer so its off at night or should i leave it on all the time? I've heard of both methods and am wondering which one is best. Also, should i set up a small fan? These plants will be growing in here for about a month, Then the weather will be nice enough to move them outside :-P

you should ALWAYS have a fan, air movement is how the plant "breathes". "100w bulbs" surely you mean cfls = to 100 watt incandescent.

are u using standard 100 watt houselamp bulbs? If so, runaway and runaway fast! Go to wal-mart and pickup a 15.00 48" fluorescent fixture and a 2 pack 6500K 2000 lumen bulbs for $10.00. And veg the whole time with that set up!! For general knowledge the higher the K or Kelvin number the bluer the spectrum (perfect for vegging). The lower, say 3000K the redder the spectrum. Perfect for flowering. You wont need a fan for cooling and you will want to keep the light 2 to 4 inches off of plants. I would use a fan though for ventilation purposes... This advice is for poorer growers like I first started out. Your yield wont be as large but you can FIM, LST, or Scrogg and increase your yield that way... Good luck and holler if you need anything! Stay away from full spectrum or cool white 4100K lights. These slow growth considerably. Peace and God Bless...

Yeah, 18/6 is what I do too.
Plants need a dark period, stem growth occurs mostly during the dark phase.

so from what I can gather, incandescent bulbs are next to useless, so im going to switch it up to CFLs. My grow box is about 4 square feet, so how many CFLs should I put in there? and how many watts should I look for?

the best thing is to go to the CFL thread on here, because there is so many options on setups and wattage etc. I would just go with what you can afford and use the kelvin/lumen scale to your benefit. the higher the kelvin rating, the better for initial growth. same for opposite. good luck
