Because your room is 8' long, the light from a single grow light would have to travel at least 4' just to make it to the far end. If you use 2 smaller lights (spaced properly) the light would only have to travel 2'.

That may be obvious, but the important thing to remember about light is "Half the distance means 4 times the usable energy". That may be the single most significant statement one can make about light placement!

In answer to your question - one 1,000 watt may be ok for your square footage, but not for your narrow shape. Two 600 watters would be better and three 400 watters would be better still.

as above mate, the 1000 will do but your better with 2 or 3 smaller ones for the light 'footprint'. personally id go with 2 600s.

You should be fine. Jorge Cervantes, the pot growers' guru, says a 1000W bulb will sufficiently cover an 8 x 8 room.
Your low ceiling will cut down on your coverage area, so make sure you mount the light as high up as possible.

Good luck, BigSteve.

That is contrary to everything anyone has ever said on the subject, as far as I know! I wonder what he would say about that today? Surely he wasn't reccomending that as an ideal situation!

Would it work? Maybe.

Can we do better? Yep!
