Lighting ?

i have an old lamp that uses a 300w quartz bulb....could i use this light?

I dont think you can but check the FAQ theres a section dedicated to lighting and tells you about every single type whether they are good or bad

The lighting spectrum isn't really efficient for growing plants. There will be a very high amount of far red light without enough blue light and this is going to cause a huge amount of elongation in the stem.

Stick to the advice above of go with CFLs.

Lumens is actually a poor figure to use because lumens takes into account of the sensitivity of our eyes to different lighting wavelengths. That being said, with HPS the photosynthesis net saturation point for marijuana without carbon dioxide enhancement is in the ball park of 6000-6500 lumens per square foot (in photobiology we would say the Pn for a C3 plant is 1200 umol/sec/meter^2). This is the level that I run my plants.
