Lights for vegetation?

Hi all,

Ive just started germinating and am thinking about what light would be ideal to use for the vegetative stage. I have a 400 Watt sodium light (which I'm planning on using for the flowering stage) but I've been recommended others such as white LED's and UV. What do you guys think? Is there anything else you'd suggest? It also needs to be something easy to find say in a hardware store or pet shop etc.

Cheers!

Well depends, if you want low heat go for CFL's. If you can handle the heat I've seen a lot of people have very good results from Metal Halide. I used a 200w and 125w CFL for my veg tent, worked pretty damn well :)

if your 400w ballast can fire both MH and HPS lights i would just toss a MH bulb in there and roll with it. if not look into finding a T5 unit at home depot.

or some tubes (T5HO is to prefer but normal T5 and T8 is useable)

both work great for Veg, just remember to got for high Kelvin colors, 6500K is to prefer in Veg, but mix it up a bit,

I run a 4 foot 6 tube T5HO with 4x6500K and 2x2700K tubes

can Veg 4 plants for 6 weeks easily with some training

6500K emit mostly colors in the blue spectrum, and is what the plant use mostly in Veg. (Sun stand high in the sky in the spring and lets mostly blue light in so to speak, plants adapted)

in flowering the Sun stand lower in the sky in a angle that let mostly red/yellow light in (3000K or less is to prefer here)
