Liquid run off

Hi there, a conflicted newbie here. I am growing in coco coir. I've read on some sites that when you feed in coco you need substantial run off, but it also says that the medium shouldn't be too wet. Like how are you meant to get substantial run off but not make the coco too wet. This is my second grow and I completely winged my first grow without being too technical with it (such as, ph, run off, how much light etc) and it went okay but I want it to go alot better this time round so I've been researching lots of the technical points.
