little question about clones

First of all i'd like to say this is my first post on RIU but ive been using this site forever. i wanna take a quick moment to say thanks to everybody.

now on to my question... i came across a few clones lately and ive been tending to them. i have very little experience in growing but i do know a lot from what ive been reading. also i have zero experience in clones except for my recent work. i was wondering if a bigger clone means less time in the vegative state? cuz from what i know a plant has to be a certain size before it can bud.

take small healthy clones. the less the plant needs to develop the better, large clones will have a harder time rooting

okay but rooting time aside... would a bigger clone be able to be flowered sooner than a smaller clone?

its all in size preference..you can make a plant bud anytime you want,,BUT smaller plant will can equal smaller yeild..i would establish a good root system then grow it to the size you want ..

Your clones can be switched over to the flowering stage almost immediately. The size of the clones have nothing to do with it. When taking clones, you just want to take clones that are about 6" long and cut off all the leaves except the top two. You just want to get your clones to root as soon as possible. Once they've rooted, you don't need to wait until they're a certain size to start flowering them.

When you're talking about waiting to a certain size, you may be thinking of waiting until a certain age. With seeds, some people feel that the plant needs to be a certain age before it gets put over to flowering but your clones are technically 'adults' even though they're small since they were taken off of an adult plant. Many people, including me, have successfully been able to flower clones as soon as they've established roots. That's how you get super short plants like this:

Plants can grow straight from 12/12 with no veg time at all. I myself only let my clones veg for 10 days before putting in my flowering room.

thanks ta all for your input...
i know that with seeds you usually let the plant veg for at least a month so i thought it would be the same with clones? does trimming all the leaves besides the top two help it to establish roots faster?

and growweedtoday how much did that bud weight after bein dried?

Here is a bud of my chocolate rain clone. She gave me 43 grams dry 12/12 from taking root(about 10 day veg) Also shes only been curing for 10 days.

By trimming all the leaves except the top 2 you are reducing the amount of nutrients the plant will require while it is establishing roots. The plants will still root if you have more leaves on top, but you increase the chances of the clone not making it by leaving them on. It will work against you in the end because the clones will be burning the candle at both ends, supplying nutrients to the leaves on top and trying to establish a root system.

okay so i've decided to take your advice n trim my clones. but on some other threads i heard that it is also good to cut the tips of your leaves so your plant doesnt expend nutrients trying to make them grow. is this also a good practice?

and one other question most ppl say you need a dome for your clones however one of mine have sprouted roots without any dome or misting. would it be better if i had a dome and misted the plants with water?

Brother I have the absolute easyest cloning set up possible. I take a cutting, dip it in cloneX, plant in a pea pot filled w/top soil, and have a 125w cfl 4-6 inch away. I have about 65-80% success rate useing all kinds of strains. Forget the dome, screw misting i say.

Hey Dr :)

Thats a nice bit of chocolate rain :)

You been here a while ... 2008 :)

Loads of differnt ways of doing stuff i guess ... some prefer the dome some just go direct to light .. Both can be hit and miss ...But i do see a lot of people getting high sucess rates with the bubble boxes , Im thinking about making one next week for future cloneing sessions :)

so you go straight to soil with your clones? ii was thinking of doing that but the only soil i got is fox farm light warrior n i didnt know if it would be too much for the new clones. so i just went out n grabbed some rockwool. really all i did was cut dip n plant. i didnt do trimming of any kind or presoak or adjust ph or anything just straight into the rockwool with some distilled water. i planted 2 like that about a week ago, and as of now one has a pretty goot root system but the other hasnt developed any noticeable roots.

If you are planting straight into soil like me I would recommend plain top soil. And I have no dought that clone machines and bubble boxes work great, but when I get 4-8 clones rooting out of 10-12 cuttings I only have so much room lol, also I grow for me and my roommates not to sell commercially.

well my setup is as cheap as they come... this is just the setup to fund future setups lol. i just bought the most essential things for my plants n i wont be able to put any more money into my plants for at least another month. that's why i'm trying to find out what is really necessary and not just personal preference.

I completely understand bud, simple is ,top soil, pea pots, clone gel, proper light source. I have 3 125w cfls in my Mother/clone room. I keep the lights 4-6 inches away from my cuttings and mothers.

about that bubbler, i have a bubbler for my dro. if i put my new clone i just cut into a setup with the air pump init will that help sprout roots?

okay... another question about tending to my clones. when i mist them how much water should i use just like a spritz or two or do i want to see visible water droplets?

Hi ya Hubba :)

A cutting has no roots ... so in effect it has no way to get water , Misting them with water allows them to suck the water thru the leaves ( and i think the stem ) , Mist them so they are visibley wet but dont over drown them , get some mist on the soil to ... but again dont drown ... just a light misting , Its better ( if you have time ) to mist them lightly a few times a day rather than drown them one time a day , If you have a humidity dome , Try and take it off for a few seconds every few hours just to vent it and get some more air in there to give it a fresh supply of clean air :)
