I found the best way to scrape a pipe is an e-string from a bass guitar. They work great. Just go to your local music store and pick one up.

this is how i clean my pipe. [(pour some rubbing alcohol in a ziplock bag and add 3 or 4 tbsp of salt (kosher or sea if u have it)] have this on stand by.

1.boil a pan of water and throw in 3tbsp salt>> 2.gently set your pipe in the water and make sure the inside fills with water>> 3.let it sit for around 3 minutes>> 4.get some tongs and give the pipe a good shaking in the water>> 5.pull the pipe out with the tongs and empty out the water>> 6. repeat 4 & 5 twice>> 7.gently pull your pipe out of the water and set it on a towl for a couple secs.>> 8.now put your pipe in the ziplock bag>> 9.shake that bitch to death>> (if u rap in towl u can shake even harder)... now your pipe should be as clean as the day u bought it.. if its not then u diddnt shake hard enough!!!

Good Luck...also this methods puts off a resin smell in your house so i hope your not trying to be stealthy. (u can also do this on ur gas grill)

If you're going to boil your pipe in water, make sure you submerge the pipe before heating up the water. That way you dont put a room temp pipe into boiling water (which could crack the glass).
i usually hold my pipe over the boiling water for about 20 secs before i put it in. works great for me. good that u pointed that out though!

the green alcohol is that wintergreen scented 50% shit. get the 93 or above. also if you're going to boil your peice use a shitty pan. it's not that you can't get it clean again but it takes way more work than just hand cleaning the peice imo. not a wise investment of time. i suspect you shouldn't need to boil it if you use better alcohol unless you want it in what i call "travelling condition".
