lots of small plants or a few bigger ones?

Getting ready to start my first real grow. I'll be in a 4*4*7 tent with a 600w hps with Hempy buckets. I can't decide if I want to run 10+ small plants at 12/12 from seed or just have 4-5 and veg them for 3-4 weeks and then flower them. Any input or suggestions? I'm wanting to get about 12 ounces from the grow...enough to last me and the wife until the next grow is done.

I like to grow just a few big ones.If your growing from clones it may work out better for you to just grow a bunch but I dont have a clone tent so I always grow from seed and a few big plants usually gets me from one harvest to another. Strain selection will also be important. I like to go with heavy yielding strains as opposed to strains like LA Confidential that are not good yielders but great smoke. A few northern lights phenos are great smoke that can produce a good amount of bud. I have also had good luck with Bella Donna from Paradise seeds. A good yield and great smoke. its like a 50/50 hybrid and its pretty awesome. Anyway I would go with a few big ones. Good Luck Dude, I hope this helps.

I limit plants to 5-6 in that space. This is a matter of choice and grow techniques, and what type system, soil or hydro etc, figure into the final choice. From small clones; Many plants. From seed. I would stay fewer plants. Good Luck, and Happy growing. Peace :)

Hey buddy,

If time isnt much of an issue then I would grow 4 to 6. Bigger plants = more bud, less seeds = lower expense, less plants = easier maintenance. Don't forget that you can end up with the same yield regardless of number of plants...the point is to fill that space you have with green either with 1 plant or 100 plants!! Of course with 1 plant you would need to veg for ages, but 4 to 6 is reasonable. Of course if you like the idea of 12 or 20 tiny plants then thats fine also...maybe you wanna try 15 different strains or something, which is understandable ;) Happy growing

I would say from seed:veg for 4 weeks then throw them into 3 gallon hempys. You should be able to get at least 1 ounce per gallon of medium pretty consistantly in Hempy, its a great system. I would then just take 2-4 clones per plant 3 days before you throw them in flower, so that you are ready to go woth a mother and do a Hempy SOG using 2 liters and average 7-14 grams per plant....4-2 liters per sq foot homie, no veg

What would I put them in during veg? A smaller Hempy bucket like a solo cup? And then transplant them into the 3 gallon buckets when u am ready to flower?

In a worst case scenario
Look at the laws where u live.
If u were to be discovered growing illilegally its easier to convince law enforcement that 3-4 monster plants are yours for personal than say 30 tiny plants.
In court all anyone will say is it was 30 plants.
No ine cares how long u veg they will assume every plant as a lb or whatever craziness they follow.
Besides that id say 4 nice vegged plants should yield the same as as many tiny ones u can physically fit in there.

Just my two cents but thats how i decided

i say do alot of smaller plants, ive noticed the bigger plants have alot more of the lower buds that are wispy garbage. wile with more smaller plants their arnt as many of the lower buds that cant get light to grow large...just my opinion

Thanks for the input guys. Just found out that I will have to downsize to a 3*3 tent because the 4*4 Ines I looked at are too tall for my space. I hadn't thought much about the law aspect of it but what torontoke said makes a lot of sense. I had been leaning towards a bunch of small plants but now I M not sure. In a 3*3 I could maybe get maybe 10 small ones or 3-4 big ones? Which do you think would be the easiest to go as far as maintenance and work? So many decisions!!

Make it simple on yourself, because this seems to be a new experience for you. A few plants, then clone them right before you go into flower. Then you can grow more if you want as soon as they root, or you can throw them away. It will be way less maintenance, and it won't be as stressful with less plants.

i agree, maybe start with a couple and clone a bunch for next round and weigh ur results to see which works better for you...but remember starting from seed you need to veg at least a month to have a mature plant to clone from some strains require more than a month to be mature and if seeds are regular acount for a 50-50 ratio for males and females i get 70-80% females but ive been growing a long time.. if the enviroment isnt great you may end up with more males but thats a dispute i dont care to get into in here. in any instance id plant at least 8 seeds and hope to get 4 females then clone the best looking 1 for your next run...best of luck,,,growers unite.

Canopy ends up the same anyway so its kind of just a preference thing.
Lots of little plants in the first pic, 2 big ones in the second, same tent different harvests.

If you grow fewer big plants. consider adding a side lamp to produce a bigger stronger under-canopy. :)

In the same predictiment, I will be using a 5x5 area with a 600 watt hps and am trying to figure out the number of plants with a veg time of about 10 weeks... Will a 5 gallon bucket support the root development with a 600hps and 10 weeks of veg ??

Im guessing maybe 4-5 plants with a 10 week veg under a 600hps.... Im gonna scrog too..... What would u guess my yield would be in this area ???

im not a big soil grower but from my understanding a 5 gallon bucket would be ok as long as you start adding nutrients to the medium after 3-4 weeks max as the soil will be depleated of nutrients by then.. you may be better off building a DWC with the 5 gal bucket and lid, in that DWC will alow u to grow as long as you want without worry of root bound plant.. in 5 gal buckets you can easily fit 10 plants in a 5x5 area but a 10 week veg will have tall plants and the 600 watt hps will only produce good buds for about the top 2 feet of each plant. u may want to go with a shorter veg time and grow 3 foot plants that way you can utilize that 600 watt hps and have nice 2 foot long buds on each plant.. hope i could help..

ur total yield is dependant of how many plants, if u top or not, your nutrients, too many variables, but a good grower could get roughly a lb under a 600 watt hps,,, sometimes even more...personally im struggling to reach that gram per watt but ive had some good tips recently by an exelent grower so my next run should achieve that goal.
