i have a radio shack illuminated microscope that is a pain in the ass.
i also have a miniature 45x illuminated microscope that works absolutely amazingly! for the price i bought three.

I use a 30X lighted magnifier. Many have trouble focusing 'scopes as their focal length is so short, a fraction of an inch.
HINT -- Don't bother trying to focus the 'scope with the focus wheel. Instead, lay the leaf on the back of your hand
with the dark side up. Lay the corner of the 'scope on your hand right at the leaf and tilt the unit back and forth until
you are focused.
