Thanks a ton Hellmutt Bones!!No let them grow about 8-9 inches before you top
Thank you so much kiwipaulie for this very helpful method!! Am going to take your advice! Yes, I am planning to grow vertical. Also, going to try and LST as well. Are you planning on growing vert? If so wait till they are half the height of your maximum limit and then top. That's what I've been taught for vert grows.
Thank you Ichobod crane for this very helpful advice. Am going to follow your method on one plant and see the outcome. Will update the result to this threat in a few months. As a matter of fact I just topped one of my plants before reading your post-I dont think you should LST for vert.
This makes a short bushy plant which will either need to be thinned out a lot or you will get a lot of larf.
As a matter of fact topping is not that great to do either. In vert or not. You can shape your plant with light movement.
For vert if you have a real stretcher you place the plant directly to the side of the light. This will cause it to fill in. If you have a plant that does not stretch enough you place it well below the light. This will cause it to reach for the light and stretch.
I find it is much easier to move the plant than the lights. To do this I hang bare bulbs at about 5 or 6 feet. Then if I want a plant to stretch it sits on the floor. If I want it to fill in I place it on a tables to the side. I have a flood table that sets up about 2 feet of the floor. With the pot the plant is 3 feet from the floor at the pot top.
I dont like topping because it slows a plant down while it balances back out.
It should work out fine I have been doing it for about 5 years.Thank you Ichobod crane for this very helpful advice. Am going to follow your method on one plant and see the outcome. Excellent method. Can see the benefit of not topping here. This would also train my newbie self to pay detail attention to my grow. Big CheersIt should work out fine I have been doing it for about 5 years.
Remember you can move the plant up or down if you get to much of one or the other. So say you stretch it out to much just put it up to fill in. Or if you fill in to much put it down on the floor to stretch out some.
