Medicating with homemade edibles aka trial by fire

Trying to achieve a formula on edibles, e.g. Strain + dosage(weight/frequency) for my Dad. He is looking for a high functioning high with pain management. Big guy.
I made up a batch of caramels for him with 3g's of a 12% CBD 6% THC strain used in 5 tbs. butter. (I'm not going to repeat my canna butter process it irrelevant and who cares)
Does anyone have any advice or experience with any dosing and formulation method?

.25 to .5 grams of decarbed bud per single dose. that is a quarter of a gram to a half of a gram per person. did you decarb {activate} the bud first? an edible with .5 grams {half of a gram} of top shelf is going to be crazy powerful so be real careful with it. nothing sucks like having eaten to much edibles.....
