just wondering the main difference between the two for flowering and if mh will still work for flowering and how effective it is for flowering compared to hps

Both is always better for the full spectrum and added UV from the MH, which is great for increased potency. Ultimately, HPS will aid in more flower production, therefore more yield. Most will recommend the latter because of that fact. I have read some people using MH with success in flowering too, though.

for flowering.... definitely hps

mh is more blue/great for veg...not the greatest for flowering but it will work. just not as good as an hps for flowering

HPS puts out a better color temp for flowering, and also puts out more lumens per watt than MH.

What has been said is, in general, accurate, but there is more to it than simply metal halide versus high pressure sodium. You have to factor in the color temperature. There is a big difference how plants in flower will grow under a 6500K or 6700K or 7000K metal halide bulb than they will if under a 2000K or 3600K or 3700K or 3800K or 4000K metal halide bulb .. and the same can be said for high pressure sodium bulbs, though they do not range as much in Kelvin ratings as metal halide bulbs.

But if someone wants a mixture of both color temperature ranges, if they use a wattage ballast/light that bulbs like this are made for, they can always go with a twin filament, dual arc bulb that is both a metal halide and a high pressure sodium bulb combined in one bulb housing.

I'm using mh the first week of flower to help with space restrictions, then going to hps for the rest. Never checked out the dual arc bulbs, but it sounds worth a shot.
