Hey all. Am going to put a lowryder auto under a 40 gallon hex fish tank, for my first ever auto. Thinking of using just a couple cfl bulbs and a2L soda bottle soilless. How far should the lights be above the plants canopy for the veg? And for the flower? And is just two cfl's enough?

Put 2 parts earth worm castings and 1 part perlite in a kitty litter tray. Depends upon the wattage of the bulbs, within a few inches, say 8 for veg and 5 for flower. Paint the inside white so it's reflective.
With that setup, you'd be lucky to pull half a gram per watt of light used.
Check out spacebuckets.com they'll have some ideas for you.

For best results im running my 30w & 25w cfl lights 1 - 4 inches away from my plants, literally as close as i can before heat becomes an issue
