I've heard varing rules of thumb, but some where between 3 and 5 gallons per a plant is good. And I think that means 3 to 5 gallons in reservoir size, not the total amount of water you have in there. I am in the middle of my first grow and I am using a 4 plant DIY in a 14 gallon tub. I have only been keeping 6 gallons in the reservoir though. If you check out the link in my sig to my journal, you'll see that the plants seem to be doing well. For my next grow I would prefer to use a slightly larger rubbermaid if only to have more surface space, maybe a flatter 18-20 gallon tub. So I think you might be happier with the 72L tub, 30L would be awefully tight for four plants I think.

Good choice.

I grow 4 plants in 76 liters.

When your plants are bigger
and consuming a lot of water,
then the big rez will pay off.

3-5gl/plant works great
and allows you to grow big plants.

This is three plants.
there was 4 but one was a male and I removed him.

You need to figure out how to drain this much weight.
76 liters weighs 160 pounds.

Here is how I do it.

I hope you have time to read this.

Hi Earl, I don't want to hijack zedragon's thread, but I'd like to ask pretty much the same question. I'm planning on running 6 recirculating 5gal buckets, i figure that would be about 25 gal total. Would a 25 gal control bucket be about right. That would give around 50gal in the system, so going with the add back rule once I add back 50gal of straight water from the rez it's time for a change out. Am I on the right track? thanks
