i was watering and whatnot today i noticed a few small bits of mold on top of the soil...... ive been using molasses could this have anything to do with it? theres nothing on the plants or anything like that just a few small spots on the top of the soil. temps are around 80 and humidity is around 30-40 i believe my thermo sucks so it bounces around on the humidity

If there is molding on the top of your soil it isn't necessarily a BAD thing but it is a sign that something is out of wack.

When mold forms over the surface I would guess that you should probably be watering a little differently. I had this problem when I implement drip systems commonly rather then hand watering.

What is your watering procedure? I would guess that you should either water a little less every watering or space it out a little. The top layer of soil (coir actually but what ev's) in my room is commonly dry due to air flow and humidity levels. Under that top couple mms it is plenty moist for the plant to grow.

the top of the soil was like bone dry i only water once every 3 days or so. i stick my finger in the soil as far as i can go and water when its starting to feel dry in the middle. im still under all the same conditions and watering schedules yada yada ive had from the start only difference is the molasses

Well if that is the only change in your process.

Molasses will cause your myco herd to freak out and go nuts.

So long as the mold is a brilliant white in nature there is very little worry.

Try to check your rh more thoroughly and just keep an eye on it. Dank buds will be yours in no time. If the plant looks great it probably is great and doing fine.

alrighty then, mold isn't necessarily bad then...
what about a greenish growth like algae or something? my clones get it on top of their soil sometimes. my big girls don't have it, water usually clears it up, but what and why? is this a bad thing?

While algae may not be a bad thing in small quantities it is going to be detrimental. It is a competitor with your plant for resources. The right molds actually feed your plant.
