Moving to larger pots a problem?????

Just got back from Lowe's. The chick in the garden section gave me some info and I wanted to pass it by you all for verification.

I have my kids in 4" clay pots. I'm beginning to see roots where the drain hole is at the bottom. It's time to transplant into a bigger pot. She tells me that I need to go to a 6 inch and not directly to an 8 inch. She said that the plants do better when you give them space in increments. I want to know why? Does anybody have a good reason for this? Was she talking stupid? Thanks you guys. Ps....I bought the 6" pots lol.

yea man once you see the roots through the holes in the bottom its time to repot. if your not short of space give them as much rootspace as you can otherwise everything she said was right.

yea i go 4 inch 6 inch 10 inch 2gallon then 5 gallon the roots will always go to the bottom first then start back up i only do this for my mothers i flower my clones in one gallon square pots and it works awesome

Awsome man. Thanks. So how large of a pot do I need if my mother plants can only get up to 3 feet tall? The reason being is that the system ceiling is 3'. How do I go bushy instead of tall?

So are you guys saying, if I grow from seeds, that I shouldn't start it in a medium-sized, 12" pot and then move it directly up to an over 5-gallon pot? What are the reasons for this?

this is just my opinion...

no, whenyou see roots coming out the bottom, that does NOT mean you have to replant.. and no you don't have to wait to go to a big pot... this PLANT (cannabis) has a short life cycle and ONE pot is fine..

WHAT is key is that the roots have air and water.... watering technique is vital for most grows... you want a 80% soil, 20% perlite mix in a 1-5 gallon container... you should water THOROUGHLY with 1/2-1 gallon of water per watering and ONLY water 3-10 days (when the soil is almost completely dry)

This promotes even root growth throughout the entire container... almost all planst will have roots come out the bottom... this is totally normal and is not a REAL INDICATOR of the need to transplant...

of course there are exceptions to everything...

and NOW you KNOWM

Thanks G.K. If I want these ladies to grow no larger than 3 feet as mothers, is a 4" or 6" pot going to be good enough for this purpose?

I would use at least 3 gallon containers for mothers.... probably 5 gallon..

i start in 2 quart pots and then directly to 3 gallon.
when you see roots coming out from the bottom of the drainage hole, turn the pot upside down with the plant's main stem resting in between your index and middle finger. let the whole thing come out of it's pot and into your hands. if the soil is slightly wet the root mass will stick together because water molecules have a tendency to stick together. DO NOT TRY THIS IF THE SOIL IS DRY.
you can actually see the root development. the plant is considered pot-bound if the roots are starting to encircle the pot, then you need to repot into larger quarters. it does not really matter whether you repot into a slightly larger size or plant directly into the ground. however if the plant is TOO pot-bound you will need to root prune about 1/4 of the total root mass before you repot. the reason for which i can tell you another time.

The reason that lady told you to go from 4in to 6in then 8in, is because roots grow along the walls. When you transplant thsi is cleary visible. Well this being said if you move from 4in to 6in, there is going to be a rootwall at 4in, it will build up, then when you go to 6in, the roots will spread out to the 6in and you will get a rootwall there, then 8in, and so on.

Thats why the lady told you to do it, but like GK said for cannabis plants, its kinda unnecessary, and I wouldnt worry about it.

The lady did know what she was talking about, but just not for cannabis.
