Mr Cool DIY mini split

I'm in the market for a 18,000 btu mini split heat pump. It needs to have an auto feature in order to have either ac or heat on demand. I really like that Mr Cool's line sets are precharged and I can install it myself (DIY model). Just a little concerned about the quality. Love the price. Thanks, I could use some good advice..

nothing is do it yourself ........u still need the valves and compressor/vac

it is cheaper to higher a guy for a hour then buy the tools as u would not use them other then this and maybe 2 years later

I'm talking about a unit that comes with the refrigerant already pre-charged.. No special tools required. Check out the link.

Precharged line are bad, something about acid build up or some shit.. Fuck it try it yourself and let us know how it works

see that is how they trick yah saying that .......if the system has a small hole anywhere compression fitting leaks the whole system is giant heater....then u are paying for what ever replaced freeon to re do the system

u need to vac the lines out so no moisture in them and then pop the freeon in to replace the vac and get to pressure u want
this takes a vac/compressor that is about 150 bucks and a set of valves about 50 bucks

the vac test tells u if the fittings are all 100% before u release it ......it is a must really no one takes 100% ownership pride in a product anymore it is all about the money ....hire a guy for 75 bucks a hour pre drill the hole in the wall to pass the wiring and lines tho ......make sure the breaker is ready for the system and check off wiring ......he will be 30/45 mins and out of there with them backing the install if it leaks in a set time they will come out fix and recharge system normally at their cost or reduced cost to u

really there is no way they can sell a DIY kit

as all the tubing and wiring is different for each person ........those lines need to be vacced out so no moisture is in the lines/system at all otherwise the line will block up freeze crack all your gass is gone and giant heater/fan

at some point u have to cut to fit the line or get a longer one for what u wanted to do (hide the compressor outside place area where sound would be baffled)

That's kind of what I thought. The only reviews I could find on it were from the EBay seller. Probably to good to be true.. Mitsubishi Mr. Slim seems to have good reviews. I live on a small island, it's not going to be easy to find a HVAC tech. Any recommendations on a brand...

Acid buildup.. Acid from what? I'm thinking hard on this one.. I can't make my mind up. Maybe somebody who's tried one of these units will chime in.

Don't forget the electrician, I have hooked up a few, both the outdoor unit and the indoor unit will require power. The refrigerant lines will have to be ran and the system will need to be vac'd and charged as other's mentioned and control wiring between units also. Not a DYI yourself for most people unless they are a HVAC guy or know one.

I am opting to go with a PTAC rather than a mini split, cuz my local hotel is gonna replace theirs soon, and I can get one or two free... and they run on a 240v line, pre charged, simple sleeve install thru the wall, heat/cool, even wireless thermostat if I plz....

Sweet deal.. I assume you're talking the electic version. Curious about the difference in efficiency between the technologies. I think I'll stick with a mini ..

PTAC and mini split are same tech, just remote, Ptac back has to be outside, where mini split can put head interior wall and unit outside anywhere ie. Roof usually .

I have install a few of these precharge Mini-splits. Mine was the easiest because of the quick connect on the hoses. All of the units I have install a still working fine. The vacuum is not necessary because you use the bleeder valve to push out any moisture. The procedure is in the directions. The most important part is to make sure there isn't any leaks at the connections (spray bottle with soapy water).

indeed, but like the OP, I am more interested in not playing with refrigerants, and leaving my vac pump connected to my shatter chamber where it belongs, lol.

I'll cut a hole n mount a sleeve before I break out gauges and vac pumps, start worrying about torches and copper lines, fuck all that.... all in one works for me, but I never go above 12 plants total....

Good to hear that the pre-charged units are working well for you. I'm still trying to decide on what unit to get but your experience is encouraging.

I installed an 18k btu Mr Cool DIY unit last year and it is working great! I purchased mine online from Ingrams out of Tennessee and was delivered to my front porch. Installation went very well, instructions are pretty clear & if you are not sure about something, you can call them and/or email them and they respond pretty quick. My hardest part was drilling the 2 1/2 inch hole thru my brick wall. Installing the wall unit would of been nice if I had some other person helping me but I still accomplished it by myself. I placed the outdoor unit on a concrete slab that I already had, I simply screwed it to a couple of 2 x 6 pieces of wood and then they sat on the slab. The instructions make it very clear not to overtighten the connections so I went too safe with that!! After I connected everything and powered up the unit, no cold air!! That's when I kind of panicked & called Ingrams customer support. It turns out that I did not tightened the connections all the way!! Once I did that, bingo...Cold Air. I would highly recommend this to anyone that has DIY skills. I would mention that before I purchased this, I got a quote from Home Depot and they wanted $3,800.00 for labor!! My wife & I looked at each other and said...DIY.
