mulch

could i use mulch as part of my soil. would that be good?

I'm not sure what you mean as part of your soil. Mulch (from what I have known) has always gone on top of the soil around the plant. Alot of people have put mulch on their gardens around different plants. What mulch basically does is keep the soil from drying out to fast, it keeps the soil wet or damp longer so the plants can gather more water. And yes mulch would be a good idea to put around your plants outside on top of the soil, less work for you with watering. hope that helps
