My 1st home and 1st grow room! Need advice

So, my wife and I just bought our first home 2 weeks ago and one of my first projects is to start my very own grow room. I have a nice slab basement with all the wiring done up for me. I am looking for a space for 3-4 plants for personal use only.

I am completely "green" at this, no pun intended, but the last time I tried this was in my apt. and it didn't work out to well. Now that I have the time, space (<--most impt) and privacy I would like to get started sooner rather than later.

Again, I am looking for 3-4 plants.
How many lights? Size? Kind?
what is the optimal size of a grow area for that # of plants?
Thoughts about basement growing? any concerns?
Any other input or questions are welcome!
money is sort of an issue, but I'd rather have a quality setup.

Thanks in advance.

I would go with something like a 1 or 1.2 meter square tent. Put a 600 watt HPS light in it, preferably in an air cooled hood.

Get some big pots 15-20 litre ish and fill them with some really good soil. I personally use 50 50 biobizz all mix and gold label special mix and then I add 20 percent perlite.

In pots like that you shouldnt need to feed at all until a week or two into flower after a good months vegging time :)

I would keep them on something alg-a-mic or a similar tonic with vitamins minerals and amino's. Molasses works well if you are going organic.

Then for flowering just get a basic flowering food and maybe a booster of some kind. You will be fine.

PH 6.5 - 6.8 for organic ferts :)

Make sure you have good ventilation, both intake and outake and preferably air cooled lights. I seriously recommend a temperature controller :) It will save you a lot of headaches.

You will need timers for the lights to keep them on 18/6 and 12/12 repectively.

For your first grow keep it simple. Just a basic flowering feed that you feel comfortable with.

NEVER EVER FEED WHAT IT SAYS ON THE BOTTLE.

Look at journals and the advice on the grow schedule and start at around half to a quarter and work your way up. Dark green leaves means lots of fert and light green growth means they are hungry - feed when they are hungry :) you'll get the knack.

Sorry about the rambling post but I hope it helps :)

Spend the money on the tent/building a box to line with mylar. Spend good money on temperature controllers and air cooled hoods. buy some ph drops for 3 quid to check your PH.

Remember some of this stuff will last years and will be worth the investment many times over.

Build a wall at the mid point of the basement, install a security door, get yourself some good genetics, get yourself some good dirt and good lights and get a couple a hundred starters going and play the vigilant gardener role, six months from now you'll be up to your eyeballs in good bud, enough to last for years if you only use personally.

I tell you one thing invest in a good HID light like the guys said above 600W or better because right now you say 3-4 plants but trust me 3-4 will turn into 10-15

a 5x5 tent is a great investment, also a 600watt switchable for veg under mh n flower undre hps. a 6in air cooled hood with a scrubber n in line fan will take care of smell and air exchange. that would be the basics you need. growing medium n such is a personal choice. hollar if i can help any further...good luck

I grew in a basement back in the days with a friend of mine, biggest problem we had was humidity causing mold which is very bad for your plants/buds
I dont know how damp your basement is but if it is anything like mine was then i would recomend you buy a dehumidifier (run it before you put anything in there, including tent or equipment) Once you have at a nice 50 % then you will be good to go with no worries of mold attacks....It would then be a good idea to fire up a couple of them pest killing bombs, once all that is done a good clean up would be in order. Do that and you will begin your grow without worries of mold, pest. Dehumidifiers are a good investment and not too expansive (200$)
Best of luck to you and happy growing :)

above is all good advice. the only thing I can add is consider 2-3 rooms or a large room w/ 2-3 tents. you will want 1 for flower & 1 for mothers, clones and veg time. a 3rd is nice if you can get clones from others to isolate or to experiment w/.

Congrats on buying your 1st house!! Wife and I got ours a year ago this month, exciting stuff (especially once you're growing in it).
