My First Determined Grow with CFL

Hi everyone, I'm new here on RIU and I've recently started to grow and i was wondering if I'm doing everything correctly or at least if it will work because I've been doing quite a lot of research but I'm new to this all. Anyways I started on Friday of 5/6/2016 and i got two clones feminized. It's been three days and I'm using two 40-watt CFL's 2,800 Lumen and three 14-watt CFL's 5,000 kelvin. (I will be upgrading soon but can't afford at the moment) I also have two small fans that you can see in the pictures.I don't know how much more wattage i would need for my second plant but right now i have both under the light. I'm assuming I'd need more since it's about 100 watts per plant.My lighting schedule is 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness and i use a timer on my phone since I'm home all day and can't afford a grow timer for the lights to automatically turn off. When i first got the clones the soil was already damp so i watered on day 2 using tap water and now it's day three and I'm waiting for the soil to get dry/light so i can begin my ongoing schedule of feeding my plants nutrients weekly using a 1 gallon of water mixed with 1 teaspoon of nutrients. I will continue to water normally without nutrients per day IF needed (top of soil is dry/light). I've did some research and it says that i'd only use the 1 gallon mixture of nutrients weekly. I'm just waiting and hoping that everything goes right and the plant continues to grow. Also i was told by a friend that i got the clones off of that i should transport the plant to a bigger pot with drainage holes of course. So i'm looking forward to doing so this Friday using Dr Earth Pot of Gold soil mix (Did some research and said that was the best type of soil for mj plants) Couple things I've been worried about is the temperature since i don't have a thermometer, the grow room is quite narrow but long, and the Ph level of my water since i don't have neither a PH test kit or Ph tester. Lastly, I've been covering the bottom of the door closet with a shirt to prevent any light from escaping i was told from a friend this a good idea but i dont know if its correct. If it is should i stop doing that when the plants sleep? Another thing, I was told to cover the walls with foil.. this a good idea? Anything you guys could recommend? It would be greatly appreciated and i'd love to be more confident about what I'm doing.

WELCOME to RIU. You will find a lot of great information on here, but also some not so great information. The most important thing is to continue to learn and do individual research to find what works best for you in your garden. Make use of the forums search bar, as this is a great way to find threads that are posted on topics and questions you may have. Furthermore, don't take information as being a 100% valid without verification, I prefer members who have photos, videos, etc to back there claims, but even then every garden and grower are different.


Finally, please know that "Well-Known Member" doesn't necessarily equal "Great/Knowledgable Grower" as many new members tend to make this assumption. I am a prime example of a new grower, who has received this status simply because of my activity on the forum!

I would check out the some of the advice threads for first time growers. I have never grown from clone and don't use cfl myself, however from the pics the soil looks really wet. I would recommend making sure you don't over water as this is the #1 mistake made by beginner growers including myself. I would make sure to check check out the cfl threads. However, I feel that the cfl lighting has NO reason to be that far away. In reality they could definitely be within a couple inches of the plant.

You have enough light for the time being. How well are those rooted? I would cut back on the watering some. It doesn't need to stay wet.


How old are you? This is a 18+ year old site.

Kind of a weird question for the OP? Profile says he 36, and granted this is an 18+ website, how would anyone prove otherwise? Pretty sure if your under 18 you can't make a profile, however on the internet it's obviously hard to verify. Not really sure what your goal of asking was, but I tend to assume anyone here with a profile is 18+.

I'll give my 2 cents get rid of that carpet in your grow space, be a bugger to clean up spills. Been there myself!

Its not weird question. I just don't want to be a part of a thread where some teenager burns tbier parents home down.

Who at 36 can't afford a timer? You can get one for less than five bucks a Walmart.

Indeed...seems uninvested....i have no tips for undedicated grower regardless of age

Touche. Very valid point there! I guess my assumption wasn't based on the inability to afford a timer, but rather that he stated he was home all day. This led me to assume it is someone who is out of school, but most likely unemployed who was hoping to grow to "get rich", however you make a good point that as a newer member to this forum have definitely noted, as I would want no part in that either.

Uneducated part I have no problem with as that is what this site is for.

I just don't want some kid to burn their parents house down. That would draw negative attention to this site and cannabis community.

It is our duty as cannabis users and growers to lead by example. Quit blowing houses up with butane and don't burn them down with crappy setups.

Very true, and I guess I just hadn't overly considered the whole scale and magnitude of this site as a whole. I agree that there isn't an issue with "uneducated" as myself being a new grower have gained tons of knowledge from this site, however I feel there is a difference between an "uneducated" grower vs and "undedicated".

Even as a newbie myself it seems frustrating as to how many times people will ask the same question over and over with obviously not taking any time to research on there own. I followed this site for approximately 6 months and tried reading, and searching out questions about lighting, pot size, grow medium select, etc before joining and asking for guidance, Wasn't overly hard, but still had issues I couldn't put my finger on, thus the benefits of this site.

Again, today I am learning new information, such as the ignorance of my post about your question in this thread. Thank you for the guidance!

I misread. I'm dyslexic. I completed school, went into the military and then college with it. I still misread things sometimes though.

Thank you! I think i have been watering a little too much. I just barley started feeding the plant as well and this time used less so that's a good thing. I'm over 18+ years and nothing is going to blow up, that's ridiculous. My set up is fine and i know exactly what i am doing just would love some guidance since it's my first time.

Thank you for the tip and I'm going to put the lights closer and cut back on watering as well because i had a feeling i may have been over watering.
