My First Grow - 600w GHS White Widow & Barney's Vanilla Kush

New here to the forum, as well as growing, so any help/advice/tips are highly appreciated. I’ve been creeping through various forums and watching/reading extensively about growing for the past couple of months, so I’m not a complete total noob. I just haven’t gotten my hands dirty yet .

I’ve spent the past month or so setting up everything. My setup consists of 2 grow boxes: 1-5’x4’x7’ for flowering and 1-4’x4’x5’ for mother(s)/vegging. On top of the veg box, I made 2 cabinets, 1 for supplies and 1 for clones.

This image was taken a week ago and only shows the base. I was planning on using plywood to cover the walls, floors, and ceilings, but instead I have just used it for the ceilings and floors. For the walls, I have just wrapped it with a b/w reflective material all around. It’s holding up well.

As for lighting, I will be using 2 600x Hydrostar ballasts with a Hortilux HPS and Emperor MH bulbs. The flowering room will have a large Adjust-a-wing with a super-spreader and the veg room will be using an air-cooled reflector.

The air from the veg room will be vented into the flowering room with a 240cfm 6” booster fan. In the flowering room, there is a 420cfm 6” Typhoon inline fan connected to a 6” Odor-X carbon filter venting both the flowering and vegging room out the window. The Typhoon is attached to a thermostat/fan controller and the veg fan is connected to a speed controller. Someone let me know if this vent setup will not work.

As for seeds, I will be using 5 feminized Green House White Widow and 3 feminized Barney’s Vanilla Kush from Hemp Depot. I highly recommend them if you’re in Canada. I went to the postal office Friday to send my money order and I received my order on Tuesday! My original order of GH WW and Nirvana Northern Lights from Attitude was taken by the customs, so I decided to order from within the border.

I have started to germinate this afternoon in wet paper towels inside a Ziploc bag. Hopefully they all crack within a couple of days…

From there, I’ll plant them in Atami’s B’Cuzz Mixx under T5s 18/6 or 24/0.

As for nutrients, I picked up the General Organics GO Box. There are not many reviews on it, and I was wondering if I should stick with it, go with another brand, or switch completely to chemicals. Any tips?

very nice setup you've got there! i'm envious of all of the room you have. I've got a 7-day old Vanilla Kush now and so far so good.

yeah just popped about 20 vanilla kush seeds as well. pretty vigorous with nice wide leaves, kinda like plush berry. my only suggestions to a first timer are to probably dilute every ratio you read to half the amount. The most common mistake is over feeding.

also dont use plywood! just wrap mylar (http://www.amazon.com/CAP-mil-Mylar-Reflective-Film/dp/B0001WW40Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328495836&sr=8-1) around the structure and leave one flap open with velcro. Plywood will make the temps rise pretty high, plus you will have to drill holes into the plywood for vents etc. and if you want reflectivity you will have to either paint the plywood (with expensive white high albedo paint) or use mylar anyway.

yah my vanilla kush have sprouted real nice and they look healthier than the white widows.

thanks for the heads up about the plywood, it would've been much more work for no reason. I picked up a 50' roll of b/w material at my hydro shop and it's holding up.

update on my little babies:

4/5 white widow and 3/3 vanilla kush seeds cracked 2 days after germinating them in a wet paper towel.


Day 1
I put 1 of each into a rockwool cube and put the rest in my soil-less mix.



Day 2
2/3 vanilla kush sprouted (the one in rockwool didn't) and 3/5 white widow sprouted (2 in soil-less mix didn't)

another WW sprouted (4/5 now). The tallest WW still couldn't let go of her shell, so I helped her out a bit.

The sole white widow in the rockwool dried out and died. My first rookie mistake

My last seedling (3/3 vanilla kush) finally sprouted. Hopefully she can catch up to her sisters...
Aside from the WW that died, I've got 7/8 sprouted. Seems like a good % for my first grow
The vanilla kushes have grown really well with nice big leaves.
I've also added a fan for these little girls...

The temp inside ranges from 23C to 30C, should I be worried it's too hot?

I just received my order from Attitude today. My original order was taken by customs and they agreed to reship my order if I made another order. I received 20 fem seeds and plan on growing out some of them with my current WW and VK. Any opinions on which strains I should grow with my current seedlings?

Emerald Jack... so I can see how it does and grab a pack The Grapefruit Kush sounds mighty tasty as well. It's awesome that attitude re-shipped. Did you have to send them a copy of the notice from customs?

You will luv da grapefruit krush its a keeper.......great veg growth.........doesnt grow much after that when in flowering. Emerald jack has a great smell it like taking a bowl of fruity pebbles and just inhaling. Watch for the veg growth on the emerald jack cause it doubles in size when in flowering. My closet was overcrowded my first time around with it. I got one about 4ft in veg just waiting for the clones to root before i throw it in flowering but these 2 are keepers for me as of right now. The customs shit is kind of scary first time ive heard that about a shipment from attitude

The Grapefruit Kush does sound tastyyy. And yes I did send them a copy of the notice I received from customs.

Sub'd...I'm growing WW from clone and im trying to figure out what breeder it is from, cant wait til i see yours a few weeks into flower

Barney's LSD & Nirvana's Northern Lights
Decided to go with Barney's LSD and Nirvana's Northern Lights. Germed 3 of each with the paper towel method and they all cracked within 24 hours. Planted them in the ground on 02/18, all sprouted the next day:

Moved them all to their final spot under a 600w MH. Light will be lowered gradually over the next couple of days until about 2' from the plants.

Just switched the light cycle to 12/12 a couple days ago. I am now using all three boxes...

I've been taken clones and haven't gotten a hang of it. The slowly dried up and died days after being cloned. They are kept under a dome for the first week or so and are misted many times during the day during the first few days. My new set of clones are starting to turn brown at the tips and dry/curl up. Could anyone point me in the right direction or have any advice to get them to prosper?

looks amazing!! why did you put fan leaves in your curing jars? i'm new (almost ready to start flowering my first batch) and i've never heard of anyone doing that...
