My first grow

Hello, in the past I've planted seeds in pots and let them very lazily grow, never pulled the males and really just watched them grow until they got pulled too early because of some scare. That was years ago and alot of things about the whole setup was not ideal for a good grow.

This time I'm doing things with a bit more planning. I started with 6 bagseeds, 4 started in rockwool, 2 started in soil. I took an 18 gallon tote and cut six holes in the tops for 3 inch netty pots and painted the outside of the tote pitch black. 1 airpump with 1 large airstone for bubbles.

Out of the seeds i started, all sprouted, two were accidentally crushed (ones in rockwool) and the two in soil got to about the 4th or 5th node of growth under a 175w MH; i didn't want them in soil so i tipped them upside down and washed as much dirt away from the roots as possible and plopped both straight in the bottom of two of the netty cups and covered with hydroton. They survived just fine and when the plants were all about 12 to 15 inches tall, i decided this big 18 gallon tote was just too much water to be in my closet and stuff, and there really wouldn't be enough room, so i moved the whole system to a basement downstairs.

The all grew in this system with PBP grow + liquid karma at about 600 ppm @ 0.5 and 5.8 pH for about 50 days. I took 2 clones from each plant. The got nearly 2 foot tall (the biggest one) and i decided now would be a good time to start flowering. I changed the res, tap water, PBP Bloom + liquid karma to 400 ppm and 5.8 pH. After about 2 days of this the plants started showing brown spotting on the bottom leaves and yellowing. So I added more PBP Bloom until it was near 700 ppm, discarded the bad looking leaves, the plants went back to being very healthy.

So now under a 400w HPS the plants stayed for a while, maybe 10 or 12 days into flowering i was able to tell my tallest plant (casting shadows over all the rest) was female, with no signs of any male preflowers. One of the plants that started in the rockwool was obviously full blown male; and he was killed very promptly as were his clones. About 2 days later the other plant that started in dirt was showing female preflowers with white hairs coming out on top, but on the node just below it also had developing male pollen sacks (hermie) so I killed it and the two clones instead of killing them I plopped them in the dirt outside on the side of my house. Those clones are actually still alive but doing almost nothing since they get almost no direct sunlight, i just wanted to see if they'd live going from water to soil medium. Anyways, about another 2 days the second plant that started in rockwool was also hermie (bagseeds are not good to start with i see).

So, I have one plant that has gotten way too tall, its about 4 1/2 feet tall at the end of week 3 of flowering. The buds are forming nicely and when i squeeze the buds lightly to feel the density I can almost smell and orange type of smell. I would take some pictures and post them but I have no camera or any way to take the pictures.

I just got a few questions. 1) When i started this the idea was to change the water out every 2 weeks, which was working good until the main plant got to be like 3-4 foot tall and wanting to fall over. I tied it up to all kinds of things with string so now i can add water from the top holes, but i can't really dump all the water out cause i can't even lift the lid without possibly causing the plant to just fall all the way over. Is this going to be ok if i just keep adding water to the desired level with desired nutes every so often? If thats ok, how am I going to do the last two week flush? Maybe just add water and siphon off water until i get it almost just pure tap water? Did my plant get to be so big (4 1/2 ft tall, 3 ft wide) because I let it vegetate too long, or because the roots are allowed so much room to grow? Looking at the tote now, there no was 6 of those sized plants can grow in it. Maybe 6 2 foot plants would fit.

Anyway, ask any questions you want, or any comments would also be appreciated. I'll keep you guys updated and i'll try to find some way to take a picture.
