Ya its normal. Let them hang dry for about a week, give or take. You want to start the curing process when you'r able to bend the stems just befor they break, if they break, its too dry. Cure them for about 2 weeks and im sure you will get the dank bud smell you desire.
Some of my buds dont smell too strong, but as soon as i break it up, it wreaks to high heaven

The length of the hang can vary a lot depending on relative humidity, I can typically have things into jars in 3-5 days, but it has taken a week before. The breaking stem is the best way to go, i tend to wait until they stems snap then jar. The jarring causes the moisture trapped in the middle of the buds to escape, may need to open to let moisture out depending on how wet it gets, and then the buds can stew in their smells and flavors, brings out the stank. All buds smell differently to different levels, i have given out bud that i about shot myself for after it was fully cured, smelled like the others before cure, smelled like parmesean cheese after the cure, changes i could have never seen.

Sorry for reopening this old ass thread. So the ultimate process for bringing out the smell we all know and love is to cure for a decent amount of time? Got to this post after researching why I'm smelling more of a lawn smell than dank.

My super dense kushes took a week to dry compared to the less dense stuff that took 3-4 days. Good strains should smell the whole time and even better after cure (for the most part). Some strains do not tho. 4 outa 5 of my last grow smelled great the whole time but the platinum bubba only came out after curing for few days.

Lack of smell can also be due to grower error

Some weed really just doesn't smell like weed. Take one of my all time favority strains and multiple Cannabis winner, Jack Herer (or many of it's crosses - J1, Jack Frost, XJ-13, etc..). Jack to me tastes and smells like some sweet purfumey candy. It is very distinctive, and a pure joy to smoke. Doesn't smell like weed at all until you smell it burnt.

They hay smell usually happens from over drying, quick drying. You would want to do it as slow as possible to bring the flavor and dank smelll out. Some strains I have grown do smell like hay for the first 2 weeks then the sweet dank smell usually comes out.

If you dry it out too quickly you are not allowing the green pigments break down enough to remove the green taste and hay smell and allow the thc oil smell/taste to take over. Sometimes if you leave too much leaf matter on the bud could cause this.
