Going away and afraid that your plants will dry up, particularly now that you've become a
container gardener? Or maybe you're just too forgetful to keep them watered. Michael Nolan's
Frugal Mania presents
the cheap way to make your own self-watering device.
It doesn't get much cheaper than this. All you need is a plastic water or soft-drink bottle and a piece of old pantyhose.
This is amazingly simple. Drill or nail a few holes in the plastic lid. Put a piece of stocking over the top of the bottle before you screw the lid back on. He says, "This will ensure that no dirt or debris clogs up the holes you drilled in Step One."
Cut off the bottom of the bottle. Put the bottle upside down in the planter and bury the first inch or so. Then fill it with water.
"In my case, I am growing tomato plants in 5-gallon buckets outside this year, and one of the easiest ways I have found to keep them well-watered is to use an old 2-liter plastic bottle," Michael writes.
