just an Fyi the mtn gearsmith 1000 watt dimmable ballast is not worth a shit. paid $265 for a kit and the ballast wen out in just 10 months.. there is no warranty with this product as is there is not even a company period. its a china brand product and it was decent for the price but paying $175 a year for a ballast sucks..so if your thinking about it DON'T DO IT...

just got an new one off ebay ,new in the box for $112 plus $16 shipping... has a 5 year manufacture warranty. Olympic gold.. anyone heard of it???? if this one goes out im going back to magnetic.. i even took the old one appart after i found out its a cheapo china POS it is completely covered in black electrical coating so there is no possible way to even try to fix it.. and this POS did the same as the other person stated, right at the plug it melted at the base where they meet.. i'll keep ya posted on the new ballast,as for now i put a 400 mh from my veg room.. went from 1400 watts in my 5x5 to 800 .. hope they cope and don't try to hermie on me.. there mostly c99 but i have a few indica's in there that are finicky

I just buy 600 watt Dimmable Lumatek ballasts new on ebay. if you look around can be cheap I buy mine delivered for like $125 have 3 year warranty. I have only had one go out over the years.

If you can find a below $200 highly reputable brand on Ebay go for it.

If you want to use Amazon W/ Amazon prime, I HIGHLY suggest Ipower. I have 3 of these babies (400W Ea) and they have yet to go out, the ballast run very cool, and have 100%-75%-50% settings which is perfect for lowering the heat. Still have all 6 bulbs and 3 ballast in perfect working condition after 2 years of use.

Most of the off brand digital companys come from 2 different chineese manufacturers. I used to buy and sell them while back you can pick the color of the fins and have them slap your label on them but the guts are all the same. Super cheap if you buy in bulk of no less then 50 units then they only cost like $80 each and over a 100 $65 each

I think you get what you pay for. When you said "good" I thought you meant bang for the buck and reliability. No offence but the chinese made ballasts don't qualify as good in any way...just cheap. Solis tek, lumatek, and phantom are brands I would consider if I was looking for good.
