Need advice on pressing rosin, newb

Yo peeps, I scored a deal on a nice rosin press recently, and I’m chomping at the bit to try this dude out. I’m nearing harvest, so I’ve been preparing, I have my drying room well tested, just waiting on my buds to be ready. While tending I’ve broken a few branches and the ones that had cloudy trichs I’ve trimmed and done a practice dry in my new room. My question is, even though these aren’t mature there’s still lots of goodies in them, would it be worth a practice run with these little nugs? I’ve only done kief in the past so try to be kind please.

Why not? I'd wanna try my new toy also. Go for it, get crazy.

OP wanted facts, I could throw an opinion or two but it's a lot of work to be disappointed. I'd say keep the solid tops and squeeze whatever you aren't gonna smoke, but OP stated he's used to kief wax, so he would probably be un-impressed or at the very least OP would want to consider pressing hash.

pressing flower actually simulates a low-temp press, so if that's what you like you can achieve it by pressing under 200 degrees. FYI

higher micron bags also tend to produce more budder style compared to high temp/small micron/dry flower

This is some I did just now at 207f, 90 micron, only went to 2800 (psi?) on a 20 ton press. My press leaks so my results aren't even great. photo is under 100x magnification plus zoom

As long as the buds arent too premature, its def worth a practice run with your press...I just wouldnt waste any micron bags on it and just press straight to parchment.

When you are ready to do a non-practice press, you def should use rosin bags as well as a pre-press...will give you the cleanest results and make your process more efficient. I usually average 15-20% returns on flower and press up to 20 grams of flower at a time on 3x5" plates.

Thank you. I louped these and they were loaded with cloudy trichs (only inside the buds, calyxes, and sugar leaves) so I know there are at least a few goodies. I’m planning on building a pollen box and making rosin from kief later. I’m trying to keep it simple for now. Am I correct that I can just use parchment paper to press flower, I don’t need the bags for that, right?

You can but you will end up with some plant material in the rosin. Totally fine if you are just experimenting with early sample branches but its worth it to buy a pre-press as well to form your flower into nice uniform pucks that slide right into your bags. Also lets you stuff them with way more material than is possible without a pre-press.
