New Hanna continuous meter problem

Hey all,

I just recieved my brand new Hanna HI981504 continuous meter.

I wanted to test my tap water to see what I was working with. So I filled up a glass of water and stuck all three probes in. ALL the numbers went CRAZY! The PH was all over the map, it jumped around a little when I put it in alone, like 6.5 to 7.2 and in between which I thought was way too much just by itself, but now it was going crazy. TDS was fairly steady by itself and it was also going CRAZY. Temperature wouldn't even read anything just displayed ---.

Anyone have ANY idea what the heck is going on? I paid $180 bucks for this thing and it doesn't even work! What am I doing wrong?

I tried the cleaning solution on the TDS and the PH probe and it didn't affect anything.

Any ideas would be great! I was planning on starting soon, guess I'll have to hold off til I solve this problem.

Hey have you calibrated it? Im pretty sure ALL new ph meters do require calibtrating. You need to buy 2-3 different calibrating test solutions before using it for the first time. Then it will also require calibrating periodically after use.

The temp sensor only shows this when I stick all three of them into some water. Otherwise it works fine. Along with the TDS, works fine when by itself or the temp prob.

I've come to believe the PH probe is defective as evidenced by this picture. It looks as if it has a broken wire. There is only one wire in the tip of the probe and this one is a light wire then at the tip is dark like it's been burned or something, plus it looks broke!

Send it back. That probe looks broke to me. If the other probes read about right alone, and then mess up when that broken probe is in with them that will confirm it.
New out of the box and it doesn't work? Don't mess with it and exchange it. I think liquid is getting inside that broken probe and some voltage is leaking from it into your solution and thus messing with the other probes readings.
