How far away should my 250 watt lights be from my plants?

hi, what light have you got? cfl, mh, hps? what hood you running etc basic rule of thumb is if you can put your hand at the top of your plant and its not uncomfortable then ure ok, dont forget the fans can help aswell, just watch the plant it will let you know, cant go wrong with getting a thermometer at canopy height aswell, best thing to do is have a look around the site or the webb theres loads of info, good luck
