They certainly do put out heat, they have built in fans (3 I believe). They don't put out anywhere near 1000 watt equivelent. The UFO puts out about 60 umol/sec of light, a 1000 watt HPS puts out closer to 1800 umol/sec of light.

LEDs are grossly over rated for budding out pot. Most LED grow light manufactuers are full of BS and the makers of the UFO are no different with their unfounded claims. There's a viral vid of the UFO vs 400 watt HPS comparison that is seriously flawed.

After spending $700 on LEDs and using them for 18 months on a variet of plants plants I can quiet safely say with empiricism that at this point in technology they are not a viable replacement for HPS, in fact, they're a waste of money.

Perhaps in five years when the quantum efficiency of LEDs improve (high power LEDs are about 16-20% efficient at best compared to 30-35% for HPS) and the price comes down then they'll be a realistic replacement for HPS.

Listen to the voice of experience, don't bother with LEDs.

I got a couple real cheap, one all blue, the other all red - both have 225 leds and are 14 watts each. I used them to start some plants, both weed and tomatoes. They started out great, but after they hit 6 inches, the stretch was on. They began to stretch, cause these leds just don't kick out enough light. They claim a 14 watt one is like a 150 watt HPS (not from what I've seen). I switched to a couple of CFL's and boom, the stretch stopped. Not massive size CFLs, just a couple of 28 watt ones. So it did not take much wattage to kick the leds ass. So, I'm not real impressed with leds. Ok to start seeds, but that's about it.
