This is my first outdoor grow and i have pretty good experience in horticulture since thats what i go to school for. For a school paper we had to write about anything to do with planting and soil ect. Thats when i came across the idea of having a self watering system. When i searched online i read about a system call earth box.
I realized that it was a pretty basic design. A water resevior, soil wick, air chamber and soil. After more and more research i cam across thisThe EarthTainer. This is the terminator of selfwatering sytems in my eyes haha. The guy took the idea of the earthbox and gave it steriods to create a very rigid system.
(Notice the size of those plants compared to the other earthbox. He even made a cage system to hold up lots of weight. WAY TO GO RAY!!)
Also he was agianst people having to buy an earthbox when you can create a much better one at home. He gives step by step instructions in video and pdf form. He is percise and to the point and also an engineer. He allows you to be able to buy everything from any lowes store so it is easy and practical.
Well now I have takin this system into my hands and I will be sharing with you my expierence with the earthbox/tainer.
DAY 1
This project is best done with two people so i had a helping hand.
Im glad that Ray emphisizes to go to lowes and not wallmart or homedepot.
THE LIST
lowes
-"10x10"inch wicking basket (We had trouble finding it because no one at the store knew what the hell it was lol but just look in the pond section which should be located in the ouside gardening center.)
-2 thirty two gall. roughneck rubbermaids
-2 tomato cages from Walmart, 024114710792 Glamos Wire 18"x54" Heavy Duty. Similar 3/16(i dont think ours was 3/16 but most cages will be strong enough for cannabis)
Homedepot
-1 1/2" ID Schedule 40 PVC pipe 19" long
Local Hardware Store
-15 ea 1/8" Wire Rope Clamp (These were very expensive at homedepot but only 20c each at a hardwarestore)
-10 ea 3/16 or 1/4" hole by 1 1/4" Fender Washers
Home
1 30 gallon trash bag
24 by 36 15 year DuPont Landscape Fabric material (We had some laying around to use)
2 zip ties (We just used wire to hold the top part of the cage together)
We bought everything and built it in one day
I wish i had taken more photos of the process but you can just watch the video. Its straight forward and idiot proof.
Now we are just getting the seeds started and will be growing the plants to pick out the males from the batch.
Also we are going to camo it out so it will sit well in the woods and not be seen I will post new photos up soon so keep lookin. And i am open to any advice on growing outdoors because this is still my first cannabis cultivation.
