NFT questions

I have been looking into this system but wanted to talk to some growers who are actually using this technique and see if it will be beneficial to me.

1). how many sites are you running?
2). what kinda yield (average) are you getting?
3). what size res would be a minimum for your set up, or in general?
4). is this a more economical way of grow (in your opinion) to coco sog with 1 gal pots?

I may think of others as I go, but i'm interested in this style and want to know what you guys are up to with it.

From what I understand.. There are not a whole lot of growers using this method for cannabis. None within my circle of growers.
In my personal opinion, an NFT system is best for plants that have a smaller root system.
SOG would be your best option but I would consider other methods.
Ebb and flow is simple and effective.

Meh, it depends on what you want. Setting up a NFT to your goals is going to be a trial and error thing.

But yeah, I would only recommend it if you plan on growing smaller plants.

Back in the day I had some pretty good results with it (considering small plants.)

There's pros and cons to every hydro setup. What's most important to you?

I'm mostly interested in keeping a perpetual harvest going every two weeks. I'm trying to weigh the options if I should just stick what I have always done or try something new.

I have never done any pure hydro setup... makes me nervous in a way. But I see all these awesome harvest from dwc, ebb and flow, yadda yadda yadda. .

Just not sure if it's for me... But I'll never know unless I try I guess.

i can see now where you are coming from. I too, have been thinking of a easier way to do a prepetual harvest and I would agree using the NFT would make things a lot easier. I know there are some growers having sucsess with perpetual harvest using DWC.

I would think by far the easiest way to do it is in soil.

There's a sticky thread on this very topic by the way. Lots of good info in there if you have the time to dig through it all.

@GroErr awesome man! Thanks for the link.

As for soil, I'm growing in coco now and having good results in this area and I may stick to this but I was looking into water/nute conservation and I was thinking of implementing Lucas Formula to help with the nute area. That and I think it works well for using a single system for perpetual growing (without flushing).

I don't know, im leaving towards fine tuning my known knowledge of coco to get better results.

i have been using nft for a few years now. my system is designed around superstoner1's layout. i highly recommend checking out his threads, tons of good info in there. to answer your questions-
1. i run 8 sites total, 4 per rail. considering dropping down to 3 per rail with an extra week in veg
2. i typically yield around 1.5- 2 lbs (give or take) per system. each system has one light over it. i use de lights
3. i use a 40 gallon res because thats pretty much all i can fit under my rails. i would like a 60 gal res if i could find one that fits
4. for me, yes, it is more economical than soil or coco.

How often are you doing a res change? Weekly? Thats what keeps getting to me.

I was considering going vertical as well to utilize the space in a 5x5 better as well.

Could you set this up perpetually? I'm assuming it would work the same way as if it was flat, just passing them in a specific rotation.
There are a few things to consider:

Plants can only be moved around up until a point. Their roots soon get really long and tangled up with one another and it becomes virtually impossible to move without doing damage. The way that I would approach this would be to start your seeds or clones in the same space ahead of time and time it so when the main crop is finished, the new batch is ready to go in.

also what's the foot print of this setup?
The inner diameter is 60 inches so it takes up about 70 inches x 70 inches square. I've played around with the sizing and so far what I've learned is that the optimum size is entirely dependent on the strain. I also only do plants from seed...clones might very well take up much less space if put into flower quickly.

If you've got a 5x5 space, I think you could give it a try.
