Numples' First Grow! 400w Headband & Goo Experiment!

I began this adventure with my room-mate several weeks ago. January 22nd to be precise. We germinated 19 seeds, moist paper towel style between two plates. 3 days later, all seeds were ready to go and we were excited!

Problem is, we don't know what we're doing. I've been soaking up as much information as I possibly can, for the last month it's been my obsession. I even bought a book, 'Grow Great Marijuana' by Logan Edwards. I've been reading all I can on RollItup.org and pumping my suppliers for information.

We've started with 'bagseed', however I notice that most people use this term with not much affection. However, these seeds were painstakingly recovered from some fire buds that I acquired from the great state of California. One strain, the first 18 seeds were from a strain of 'Headband' and 1 (soon to be more) was gotten out of a bag of 'Afghan Goo'

'Goo' is such a fucking awesome word.

Moving on... I went on to plant the germinated seeds in those instant jiffy-pots (the little ones), in some bullshit dirt that I purchased from Wal-Mart (1st big mistake). We put the little guys underneath a T8 CFL 'grow-light' about 1-2 feet away from the bulbs. The girls were on an 18/6 hr schedule for about two weeks when I decided to add an island breeze fan into the mix (tall, slim fan that rotates). The next morning half of the plants had been murdered by the flow of air and the mix of shit dirt I had so poorly chosen.

We rescued 8 of the plants, one of which was the solo 'Goo', the remaining 7 were all 'Headband'. Long story short.. My 400w MH/HPS set up finally arrived yesterday, so my grow room is now actually a grow room not just a waste of space with a poopy CFL fixture hanging uselessly there.

February 18th:
-Transplanted all plants from jiffy-pots filled with poop dirt into..
---> 1 gallon plastic pots filled with Fox Farms Happy Frog + Perlite (80%-20% ratio)
-Coated my 6.6ft x 4.6ft (with 7ft. ceiling) room with 2mil thick mylar
-Installed Sun Systems Yield Master II reflective hood with 400w MH bulb

So here we are... I'm not even in double digits in posts on this site but I hope some of you more experienced green-thumbs will take pity on me and guide me through to the promised land. I've already learned so much and can't wait to learn some more. I want to thank you all for your patience and criticisms in advance!

It's my first night with the MH blasting in the hallway and I can barely sleep, this is more fun than the last 10 Christmas' put together. I will d/l my pics and post them right now.

January 22nd - February 18th (under CFL T8's from too far away), hopefully the distance from the light and intensity of the 400w MH light make a huge impact on thickness and bushiness of the plants..

This is pics of the plants under the MH for the very first time. My plan is to veg them some more, while I plant seeds of Pineapple Kush, Afghan Goo and more Headband and veg them all at the same time until the newborns are big enough to flower. These 8 will be larger when we induce flowering but we've already written them off as experiments..

Don't get me wrong, I don't plan on fucking these perfectly good girls up on purpose hahaha. BUT we're not trying to use another room in the house so we're going to keep them all together and forget about trying to stagger grows. Plus this is my first so I'm putting all my positive ju-ju and focus into this one little room.

Germination didn't take long with these ladies.. They wanted out and I'm going to grant their wishes..

Dropped them into some 1988 Super Mario Dixie Cups filled with Fox Farms Happy Frog..

About 21 Headbands and 5 Pineapples.. Have 5 more Afghan Goo's that are going to be in the mix within the week..

Stay tuned I'll take pics as soon as they pop their pretty little heads up!

I know I'm just a rookie but everybody is more than welcome to throw their two cents down as long as it's positive ju-ju flowing all over my girls and I (constructive criticism is also welcome)..

Here's some more pictures of my new grow room, it's a split level..

Top floor running 400w MH for the older ladies..

Basement has a 2 x 4ft T8 CFL's for the seedlings..

headband is bomb bro. good luck on your grow tho! my first grow went great. its easier than you think really. this is some headband grown under a 600w with H&G nutes.
That looks mighty tasty, a deeper hue than I remember from the batch I got. Thanks for the heads up on the nutes too, I lost your message somehow and couldn't figure out how to reply.

Hopefully I'm better at growing than navigating this site so far hahaha.

Awesome, I thought I subscribed to yours already but it looks like I didn't hit submit, I'll hunt it down and see how yours goes too. I looked around everywhere for the ocean forest but I'm in a smaller town with not a lot to choose from, it's the best I could come up with. Do you know the difference between the two soils?

I've got the Fox Farms tri-pack coming but that's 'cos it was a bundle deal with a light-set I bought. If you're swearing by the Technaflora I will definitely check it out since I'm trying to keep everything simple and minimal effort for my first grow, not trying to over-do it or make it more complicated than I have to.

Thanks! Everything seems to be going smooth so far, just wish the second batch of seedlings would hurry up and get a little bigger so I can veg them under the MH, but waiting is part of the fun!

I've already run into somewhat of a problem, well it's not a problem yet but if I can't be here all the time to monitor them I have problems with the room getting way too hot during the light hours, when I'm home I keep the door open with a box fan in the doorway, but when I'm gone I shut the door even if the light is still on just incase I'm not home in time for the night cycle to start.

In your guys opinion and experience, what's the best (most efficient and economically friendly) way to vent the room? I don't even have the other 400w set up yet and it's going to make it twice as hot so proper ventilation is my next project.

ANY ideas would be great, get me thinking a bit more about it.

PS. As of now, there is a 6 inch hole in the wall, blowing air using a fan from the outside, I also have a tall oscillating fan inside the grow room, and when I'm home with the lights on, the box fan sits in the doorway expelling whatever it can.

if u got foxfarm stick with it. im def not swearing by technaflora but i think its doing amazing things for my plants right now. im very surprised. fox farm nutes do great for a lot of people. if you got that. give them a try. do you have the solubles also? my hydro store gave me a sample of there flowering stimulant solubles. i actually used them my first grow and that ended up amazing. i used a mixture of house and garden, botanicare and fox farm. and i learned that i prob should of gone lighter on the nutes. especially my first time around. more is definently not better when it comes to nutes. back to technaflora tho. a full line for 35 dollars. and it works great! the full line is doing way better than my combiantion last time. thats all i have to compare to. buying that box set would be cheaper for you than buying the fox farm solubles if you dont have them already.

can you keep the area outside your grow room dark?that way you wont have to worry about light getting in during there night. thats what i do. i have to have my room cracked at least. cause if i shut the door id overheat quick. im also in the middle of figuring out a cheap way to vent my room. but im thinking i may have to set up some good ventilation. which will prob be pricey.

Yea it's in the middle of a pretty long hallway and our place is definitely minimal windows so at best it looks like moonlight, but my schedule of nighttime is during the day (oops.. but fits with my schedule better). I'm not only worried about it heating up but I'm also worried that my gals aren't getting enough fresh air (as much as they could).

yes you can flower under cfls i know a guy that teaches a grow class on growing under floros thats all he use's

clones recognize light always and adapt its theory if seeds do or not

yes you do have to veg for a lilttle bit so that you devolope a strong root system

Ok ok.. another silly question, do you keep the mothers on a 12/12 cycle and just strip the buds repeatedly or how does that work? I'm assuming the plant dies after you harvest it. Or do you just keep replacing the mother - clone style?

that is a 'silly' question. u keep a mother in your veg room. usually just on the side under a t5. a mother is just massively topped or if possible cloned massively every so often. all a mother is is a plant you dont flower and harvest branches

Hahaha that makes more sense. I guess I was going over in my head which one I would make the mother, the one I already have growing or the little clone I'd have pulled off it. But obviously you'd use the bigger one since you don't want to flower that early if it's not a female..

The gears are turning.. Slowly but surely hahaha

UPDATE: About 12 of the seedlings have shot up above dirt level, the rest are at least on level with the surface. Give em a couple weeks and we'll transplant.

Anyone know if I'll get better growth a 12-24 inches away from the MH light compared to the 8-12 inches I'm away from my CFL lights? Remember they've only been alive a few days..

use that hole and mount a squirell cage right there on the door thats hw i would do it and the exhaust will suck in a vacume effect as long as you make a way for it to suck air in 1 fan 10 min 60 bucks =happy plants
