nutrient burn

I'm a newbie and I have been watering all wrong. I do let the plant dry out before I water but I have not been flushing the old nutes out every time I water. I have been just watering until the top and middle is wet I guess and not letting it drain to waste. I found this out because my leaves started curling and drying out and I finally broke down and bought a good ppm and ph pen and I found out the my ppm was off the chart. So I know now what I'm doing wrong but could someone please tell me how to fix it. How many times do I need to flush it out? what should the ppm read when I'm where I need to be. I'm in pro-mix and feeding with jacks classic for veg. The blue stuff. The plant is about 8 weeks in veg. If you do a run off with pro mix, the pro mix reads 300 and something by itself. Should my ppm combined with the 300 be at about 1000 or around 700 and should I just water with water only for a week or should I start again at where I need to be? I sure hope that makes sense and someone can help. Thank you very much.

Which pro mix are you using? Im also not familiar with jack's, but i've seen that it's strong? Your ppm runoff for now, shouldn't be more than 400-500. Your ph should be between 5.8-6.3. To flush, water it thoroughly until you get a runoff in that range..it can take 2-3 times the volume of your medium.

Don't flush anything. Just water thoroughly until you get runoff. Cultivate the medium well on top and pierce the root zone with a rod or skewer to aerate. Wait until your runnoff actually shows low before feeding again.
How do you water? I have used a water farm with the first plant that I grew and had no problems. I thought I would try the pro-mix. Now I'm having all kinds of problems. The problem is I water until a little comes out the bottom. After about 4 or 5 waterings my ppm are off the chart. I haven't been checking my runoff before now. I alway just check the ppm of the nutrients before I water. Please help me. How do you keep the ppm from getting out of control and burning up your plants. Do you have to check the runoff every time you water? I was told that checking the ppm from the runoff when it first start coming out is a terrible idea. I'm really confused. Thank you HOTROD

I water likewise. Feed, water. Feed, water. Then feed, water, water and check that runoff. Watch the plants and not meters. Testing pH is best with litmus paper. It's foolproof and used by pro's.

I run pro mix i make. I never pH adjust my feeds. They start 7.0 water with 125 PPM. Jungle Juice and cal mag. pH is 6.2.

People say run pro mix like hydro and feed each time. I found early that peat retains a lot of salts. Lots of variables . But safe to say feeding every other time is more than adequate . Especially if feeding full strength.

I use jacks! Jacks hydro 5-12-26 and use calcium nitrate in veg and early flower to lift N level.

Jacks is second to none, especially for the dollar. What you have is a basic 20-20-20 i beleive, fine for veg gunna need less N and more p and k for flower. You can use jacks in promix, i find coco far easier than promix may want to check out for next time...

But biggest secret to any nute is never ever use full strenghth, half max! Start w a quarter strenghth and work up IF they look hungry... nice plug for coco-no need to wait for dry cycle to feed again if they look hungry. We way overfeed these, that high ppm is proof they werent eating all you were giving her! I dont ppm, dont ph anymore.

Feed light and u will have half the nute deficiencies that a semi seasoned guy has... and never any burn.

More nutes than necessary does not equate to more or better weed thats a line of BS nute companies have been very succesful in, by making a whole group of ppl buy the same basic line, more is better. Its not!

Light feed and u will be an ace before time would say you deserve to be

I think you are right my man. It seems like if you fed ever time a lot of the nutes would stay in the soil and build up. Thank you very much

This was my first year so it was a steep learning curve. After going through nute burn, lockout and subsequent deficiencies running 1/3 - 1/2 recommended nute dose, I started flushing every couple weeks and no more issues. Salt buildup in my pots had me scratching my head and chasing my tail. So I now flush the watering before my next feeding and the girls are happy again.

I’ve been using jacks classic for years,, one thing is,,,,it lacks cal/mag, and it’s hard to augment it using hard tap water,,,, most tap water has a large amount of calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate,, to big do a molecule for the plant to absorb.and tends to plug up the plumbing so to speak,,,, so you can actually get hydration.
It’s the lime ring around yer tub with no water softener,
Throw 1/2 tsp cal/mag+iron per gal, and keep the ppm below 1000 if using tap water.
fert,,,fert, water,,, fert,,,, fert,,,,water... cal/mag the water,,,, 1/2 tsp also.
Never flush with plain water,,,, ever,,,,

are you using like a big drip tray and you drain to waste into a container?

never flush with plain water! I don't get that. WHY?
I get the blue ring around my tub and I'm using well water with a filter that has not been changed in years. It was my dad's house and I have been living here one year without changing it. I need to do that. Can you show me a pic or give me a link to get the cal/mag

Thats odd, what medium and what nutes?

My plants are never flushed, now by flush lets be clear i mean huge amounts of straight water... i dont think theres anything wrong with a periodic or even semi regular water only but thats not a flush ... problem is that word "flush" is used to describe several different things...

I think the dry cycle some mediums need adds to the salt build up. Mine sit in coco that can wick water from below and and are top watered 12 times a day... never a lick of build up

And im by no means being negative towards how you solved it, million ways to skin a cat a billion ways to grow good cannabis.

I have my plants in 12 gallon pots. All summer I was adding just enough water to allow a slight bit of runoff, if any. Also had a few pucker moments when the soil went too dry and the plants drooped. By mid-July I was having all kinds of issues. I started flushing the plants with 6-9 gallons of water every couple of weeks or slightly more frequently and all my problems disappeared. I’m using MG Tomato feed and was at 1/3 the recommended dosage. Soil is Promix all purpose. I know M.G. is not exactly ‘embraced’ by the pot growing community but it’s all I have access to and it has grown me some big ass plants. My plants look very happy and healthy right now which in turn makes me very happy! Lol.

Straight water shocks the plant taking all the nutrients away at once,, also a slightly nutrient flush actually pulls more build up away with less water,, and leaves the plant just enough to recover from the flush,,, you don’t want to stress them for any reason,,,,that’s why they sell plant flush you mix with the water,,, when you flush.
Not all tap water is lime heavy,, depends on yer location...
with pots the size you are using,,, you should NOT,,,,,,, be having any problems with nutrient build up,,,
Just my opinion...
It won’t let me post a link I’m to new,,,,I dig that,,,,
It’s avliable everywhere man,,,, you want cal/mag plus.
Tap iron isn’t chelated......
you’ll get it man,, it ain’t that hard,,,,, just learn from your mistakes,,,
I killed one hell of a lot of plants,,,,,in my day,,, oh,, ya,,,
everyone does at first,,,, if they say they didn’t,, their full of shit,,,,,,
Again,,, just my opinion...

I don’t know my ass from page one but I know what I’m doing is working. Maybe I’m interpreting the results I saw incorrectly but my plants went from distressed to healthy after I started my flush routine so I can only surmise what I’m doing is ok. Also, I always feed the day after and my soil has some amendments such as Dolomite lime so there are some micros for them at all times. Plants don’t go into nutrient deficiency in 24 hours...this makes no sense to me. Shocking a plant with tap water? I dunno man.

Funny thing, I never realized how many theories, opinions, hypothesis and general propaganda there was with growing pot. It’s mindboggling! Lol. No offence and not suggesting anything you’ve said is anything but legit. I truly have no idea...I’m no botonist and the only thing I’ve grown until now is my own hair.

Yea thats not true flushing thats just a good soaking... a full flush could be upwards of 30 gallons through the 12 gallon pots..

If ur needing a budgegt nute look up Jacks, shit rocks and cheap!

Seriously check out coco, ive found it far easier and less lrobkems than promix.
