Nutrient lockout can be cause by:
•An unbalanced PH.
•Too much of one element.
•Plant stress due to environmental factor(I.E overwatering, under-watering, extreme light stress, extreme temperature fluctuations, pests, ect).
Nutrient lockout is often presented as a deficiency, making it easy for uniformed growers to assume they just need to add more nutrients.
Here is s quick checklist I've thrown together to help people diagnose weather or not they have nutrient lockout. If I left something out feel free to add.
1.Check the PH, if your water is too alkaline or acidic you'll run into nutrient lockout.
2. Know what's in your grow medium! Be comprehensive about what you add to it. If your using organic soil like FFOF or Next Gen kryptonite no extra nutrients are needed for a good while and adding them can cause lockout. Different mediums may or may not require PHd water. Rock-wool, for example, is highly alkaline and requires a soak in acidic water to balance it out.
3. Under watering and over watering can cause nutrient lockout via root rot or cell damage from prolonged dehydration. Check the moisture content of your pots as you water. For hydro grows you'll run into the same problem if the water is not oxygenated enough.
4. Look for pests, pests and diseases can inhibit your plants ability to gather, uptake and metabolize nutrients. They can also damage root zones.
5. Check to make sure that your not adding too much of one thing. Plants require balance to properly uptake the right nutrients. A good example and a common mistake I see is adding too much magnesium. Magnesium competes with potassium and they can lock each other out.
