Hey all,
This is my second grow from seed in this outing. First one had all sorts of issues (mostly newbie grower issues, though I'm not actually a newbie, but I digress...) I used a male sativa dominant to mate with the females in the group on the first grow and got some fresh new seeds out of it.
I grew once before, many many moons ago in a past life. I didn't know what I was doing back then but learned as I went and got lucky. I stumbled on a great sativa dominant strain and found that I prefered the buzz of the sativa over the indica...as I recall it was a much more stoney, halucenigenic buzz than the indica. Though I still have seeds from that grow they were not stored right and they are way too old to sprout, unfortunately. (That was at least 15 years ago.)
Anyway,
There are a lot of products available from various grow shops online and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a "Nutrient Starter Kit" from a specific shop? (It doen't actually have to be a kit, per se. It could be individual products for specific purposes.) Such as:
xxxxx - for veg,
yyyyy - for flower,
zzzzz - for pH up/down,
aaaaa - for cal/mag,
bbbbb - ect.
I'm growing in soil and I've used Miracle Grow for veg and Shultz Bloom for flowering, but I'd like to move to something organic and a bit more specific to this hobby. I'm also particularly interested in products that will help overcome various plant problems and sicknesses.
I've got a Rapidtest Mini Moisture meter to help with watering, though I mostly go by eye and feel/weight when the plants get bigger. I've also got a Burpee Fertility/pH analyzer. Most of the problems in the first grow, however, were not pH related (so it seemed) though I did over water more than a few times.
I've currently got 16 seedlings growing of which I hope to get at least 5 to 8 females from. I'm growing using 2 4x24" T5 fixtures for veg (96w each), and a 324w T5 which will go into action during flowering (I may use the two 24" fixtures as side lighting...) all in a roughly 60" x 30" x 8' closet. I realize 8 plants may be a bit crowded but I will probably top them once or twice and intend on keeping them relatively short, under 3ft total height (including container).
I believe I've got most of the 'mechanics' of my grow closet worked out, including a new inline fan and charcoal filter on the way. And yes, I know I could probably do better with an HPS...I've got an old self-contained 250w MH Hydrofarm fixture that I used with great success in my previous life, but it is very noisy and it gets way too hot. (It always had me paranoid back then. I've read that the HPS lamps are much 'cooler' - on the order of a 100w incandecent. Does anyone know if that's true?)
At this point I want to work with what I've got and try to make the most of my setup. Particularly in quality. Unfortunately, until I come across a better strain, I'm stuck with bagseed, for now.
hmmm, sorry for rambling on...
Some eye candy: This pretty little girl may have been harvested a bit too early. It's buzz was similar to the bag of herb it came from, which unfortunately, was just ok. Hopefully her sativa/indica offspring will be more, ummm, 'user friendly'.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
JoeyV
