Odor Control question

Instead of messing with bags by the fans I was thinking of just adding cups of activated carbon right by the plants. Can I just add it into the soil?

yah, no, that wouldn't be a very good idea.. and i don't think it would do much to control odor honestly..
if your looking for a pretty easy and cost effective method to remove odor, you should check out roseman's thread called the diy odor control bucket.. he takes a bucket and cuts some hole a few inches from the bottom, mixes some water and that ona stuff together, and pours several inches of the mix into the bucket.. he than places a fan on top of the bucket so that it sucks the stinky grow room air into the bucket, where it is forced through the ona/ water combo, and it comes out of the holes smelling fresh and clean.. looks like it works pretty well, and most people probably have everything needed to build one laying around the house, all but the ona gel probably, but that you could probably get online for about $20 or so..

there are no 100% way to elimnate oder
the air in the grow room has to be sucked through a carbon scrubber to eleimnate oder this is the best way
second best way is to turn the grow room into a sealed grow room where air cant get in or out,,,but every time you open the door...
third best is to use oder killers.. not the best option but some say it work great
